While Hazelwood Central senior swimmer John Krause was a fifth-place finisher in last November’s state boys meet in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle having anyone to just qualify for the state girls meet, Feb. 20-21 at the St. Peters’ Rec-Plex, may be the top goal.
As of press time the list of state qualifiers from Florissant Valley Suburban North Conference schools was not available. So far only there is at least one state qualifier from the Suburban North, as of Feb. 1, Pattonville Diver Michelle Bell. Swimmers and divers from the Suburban North have from now until Feb. 12 (divers Feb. 11) to qualify for state.
While chances of winning state, let alone qualify for it by the standards set by the Missouri State high School Activities Association Hazelwood Central head coach Sue Harmon says the Suburban North Conference meet, Feb. 10-12 at the Bridgeton Community Center, is “like our state meet. People (on Suburban North teams) prepare for the conference meet.”
BOYS BASKETBALL–Five of the top six teams — Hazelwood Central, Hazelwood East, McCluer North, McCluer and Riverview Gardens — will be competing later this month in Class Five, District Six at Hazelwood West. Ritenour, the other team will host Class Five, District Four. Hazelwood Central is coming off a tournament championship at the Ameritime Classic at Parkway West but head coach Josh Martin says the Suburban North “is loaded.” So Martin says Hazelwood Central is “preparing for the end of the year.”
McCluer North, who was in the Class Five State title game the last two years, winning it two years ago, has two losses to McCluer and is coming off a road win last Saturday at Riverview Gardens, 64-43. Head coach Randy Reed says Class Five, District Six is “anybody’s ball game.”
Hazelwood East, last weekend, won the Fort Zumwalt North Inviatitonal while Ritenour was runner up. Riverview Gardens head coach Robert Wallace, whose team defeated Hazelwood East and Ritenour, says consistency will be the key for his team to win Class Five, District Six. East has two wins over Ritenour.
GIRLS BASKETBALL –Hazelwood Central, McCluer North and Hazelwood East are expected to be the top three seeds in Class Five District Six, Hazelwood West and Riverview Gardens are battling for the next two seeds while Pattonvile will be in Class Five, District Two at Parkway North. McCluer North head coach Bob Pechloff said “It’s going to be a hell of a district.” Nearly one month ago McCluer North won the Parkway West Tournament.
