A park improvement grant totaling $196,023 has been awarded to the City of Hazelwood by the Municipal Parks Grant Commission of St. Louis County. Hazelwood was one of 19 local municipalities receiving approximately $3,591,577 for 20 different projects.
This money will be used to fund Phase II of the Truman Park/St. Stanislaus Neighborhood Connector, a scenic trail which is part of Missouri River Greenway in North St. Louis County. When the Hazelwood City Council voted to approve the resolution calling for support of the grant application, the City of Hazelwood agreed to make a five-percent matching contribution.
“This project came to fruition due to the cooperative efforts of several government agencies working together to make it happen,” said Doug Littlefield, director of Hazelwood’s Parks and Recreation Department. “The partnership formed between the City of Hazelwood, St. Louis County, Missouri Department of Conservation and Great Rivers Greenway has given us the opportunity to provide residents with greater access to our state’s natural resources. The Truman Park trail will soon become more of a destination as the development of the Missouri River Greenway continues.”
The trail is designed to accommodate a variety of users ranging from pedestrians to bicyclists and skateboarders to roller-bladers. Other non-motorized modes of transportation can be used on it as well. \
In the future, lane stripes will be added to the 10-foot wide pathway to enhance safety and accommodate multiple users. Also, plans include adding park benches at strategic points along the way to give users a chance to rest and enjoy the scenery. Moreover, a bridge provides accessibility to both sides of Aubuchon Creek for people of all abilities.
Hazelwood combines all the amenities of big city living with the family-friendly charm of suburban life. With 17 parks on 179 acres of green space, Hazelwood offers residents a variety of ways to exercise and maintain an active lifestyle with family and friends. Many of these parklands have athletic fields, tennis/basketball courts, nature trails, covered pavilions and barbeque grills.
