St. Louis Community College at Florissant Valley will host a celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Sunday, Jan. 18, at 3 p.m., in the Terry M. Fischer Theater on the Florissant Valley campus.
Rev. Charles E. Stikes, Ph.D., professor of counseling and sociology at Missouri Baptist University will deliver a special keynote address. Dr. Stikes is a theologian, educator and psychotherapist whose focus is the spiritual, educational and mental health development of African Americans and persons of color from elementary school through college.
He has consulted many school systems regarding the achievement and behavioral problems of students of color and corporations regarding diversity. Dr. Stikes also has assisted in developing educational programs in South Africa, Barbados, W. I., England, Russia, Canada, Colombia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and China. He is a licensed counselor/psychotherapist who specializes in home-based, school, church, family and community interventions.
The event will be emceed by Renee Thomas-Woods, faculty sponsor of the Forum, Florissant Valley’s student newspaper and feature presentations by the winners of the annual NCCU oratorical contest, the Florissant Valley College Chorus and gospel musicians, Melody Graves, In a Week, and New Generation.
