As the summer downpour tapered to a drizzle on opening night at The Muny Monday, a rainbow appeared in the sky over Forest Park. It seemed like an omen of what was the come—an extraordinary opening night of “The Wizard of Oz” and The Muny’s 98th season.

For the hundreds of children who anxiously awaited seeing one of their favorite stories come to life on the big stage, it meant a very late bedtime, because the rain and stage cleanup caused a 45-minute delay.

Muny patrons have grown accustomed to the creative genius of Michael Isaacson, so it was no surprise when he made the first show of the season a kids’ show. And it was also no surprise that Isaacson’s characters, music, stage sets, costumes in vivid colors, and special effects would be able to transport everyone in the audience on a magical roundtrip from soggy Forest Park to rural Kansas, then on to Emerald City and back to Kansas.

Projected scenery on the screen at the back of the stage, startling pops of fire and smoke, a unique tornado, an adorable Toto, and Glinda the Good Witch floating onto the stage from a big pink bubble are just a few things that make this production of “The Wizard of Oz” unlike any other and a total delight for young and old alike.

Danielle Bowen gives an excellent performance as Dorothy and Peggy Roeder as Miss Gultch and the Wicked Witch of the West gives new meaning to “feeling green.” The Cowardly Lion, Tin Man, and Scarecrow are all loveable characters who are supported by a large, inclusive ensemble of Munchkins (with some in wheelchairs), a field of poppies, Winkies, tap dancing jitterbugs, singing crows, talking apple trees, and more.

“The Wizard of Oz” has withstood the test of time and it’s productions such as this that will keep it alive for many years to come. Bravo, Michael Isaacson! “The Wizard of Oz” continues through June 22. Next will be “42nd Street” June 24-30
