McCluer Boys Track & Field Wins University City-Beck Invitational

McCluer High School Boys Track And Field was victorious April 2 at the University City High School Muhl-Schemmer Stadium, at the intersection of Hanley Road and Balson Avenue.

McCluer won the Charlie Beck Invitational Boys meet by scoring 105 points and the Comets outdistanced three other North County high schools that finised in the top four. Lutheran North was second with 99, Hazelwood East was fourth with 91.5 and Ritenour was fourth with 85. McCluer won six events, three indivdual running events, two field events and a relay.

McCluer secured the Beck Invitational title when the Comets won the 4×400-Meter Relay.   Four seniors — Maleek Boyce-Rho, Josh Haskin, Kyren Martin and Kavan Ward ran the event in 3:33.41, about 4.92 sconds better than runner up Hazelwood East.

Martin won the 400 Meter Dash in 51.52 seconds, about 44/100ths of a second over Lutheran North junior Bryce Pease (51.96 seconds). Haskin won the 300-Meter Intermediate Hurdles in 40.68 seconds, about 94/100ths of a second over Hazelwood East senior Ulysses Thomas. Ward won the 800-Meter run in 2:03.78, about 6.47 seconds better than Hazelwood East sophomore Matthew White (2:10.25).

Haskin also won in field competition as he cleared the High Jump bar at 6 feet, 3 inches. Haskin waited until the bar was at 5’6″ then cleared that height, 5’9″ and 6 Feet as well as 6”3″ but could not clear 6″5″. Senior Aric Clinton won the Pole Vault as he cleared 10″6′ but not before waiting til the bar was at 9’6″ and cleared 9’6″ and 10”6″ in only three attempts.

McCLUER GIRLS scored only 27 points to finish 10th out of 11 teams but 20 points came on two wins in field event throws. Senior Jasmine Stewart won the Shot Put with a heave of 36’1″ in her second and third attempts then won the Discus with a throw of 99’8″ on her first attempt.

HAZELWOOD EAST — Besides the Boys team finishing third the Girls, with 94 points, was second to St. Joseph’s Academy, who won with 125 points, about 31 better than Hazelwood East. Meanwhile Hazelwood East was nine points better than third-place finishers Ursuline Academy and Parkway South (85 each).

The Boys 4×200-Meter Relay Team of sophomores Kelvon Phillips, Dijon Walls and Pierre Snodgras and freshman Kaylin Thompson won the event in 1:36.59. Senior Martin Chase only made one legal Discus throw, 127’4″ in his first attempt and it stood up as a winner.

The Girls team secured second place at U. City when the 4×400-Meter Relay team of Creshonna Crenshaw, Jada Jackson and Myesha Dennis and sophomore Carmen Carter won the final girls event in 4:21.63. Two events earlier Crenshaw won the 200-Meter Dash in 26.75 seconds while freshman Arlydia Bufford won the 100-Meter Dash in 13.81 seconds.

   WENTZVILLE-HOLT POW WOW — In the Boys Meet, won by Columbia-Rock Bridge (147 points), Hazelwood West was third (91.5 points) while Hazelwood Central was sixth (56). In the Girls Meet, won by Cahokia, Ill. (162.5), Hazelwood West was fourth (78) while McCluer North was sixth (59).

HAZELWOOD WEST — The Boys 4×200-Meter Relay team of senior Isaiah Cole and juniors Erion Stevenson, Devin Jamison and James Croft ran a first-place time of 1:29.61. Croft also won the 400-Meter Dash, running one lap in 52.09 seconds. Three Girls Relay teams — 4×100 Meters (53.11 seconds), 4×200 Meters (1:52.12) and 4×400 Meters (4:22.69).

HAZELWOOD CENTRAL was second to East St. Louis, Ill., in two Boys Relay Events, 4×100 Meters (44.2 seconds) and 4×400 Meters (3:33.96). Senior Urius Chambers was second in the Boys Triple Jump, making his second attempt at 40’5″. The Hazelwood Central Girls were at Belleville (Ill.) West, April 1 and with 99 points was second to O’Fallon, Ill. (116).

   McCLUER NORTH — Senior Jayla Riggins, in Girls competition, took second in the Long Jump (17’3.5″ in his first attempt) and 100-Meter Dash (13.18 seconds) while finishing third in the 200-Meter Dash (27.28 seconds). Junior Sydney Rogers was second in the 400-Meter Dash (1:02.48).

 

McCluer North Boys was at the Lindbergh Boys Flyer Classic April 2 and finished 10th with 36 points (CBC won with 124.5). The Stars won the 4×200-Meter Relay (Lance Lang, JaWaun Latham, Princeton Liggins and Erik Williams) (1:31.53).

Princeton Liggins won the 200-Meter Dash (22.78 seconds).
