Metro Catholic Rivals Chaminade, SLUH Meet Again In Class 5

Metro Catholic Conference High School Boys Basketball plays a double-round-robin during the season but for Chaminade College Prep and St. Louis University High School this will be the second year in a row they will be playing a third game in Columbia at Mizzou Arena on the University of Missouri campus.

Chaminade and SLUH will play in the Thursday, March 17, State Semifinal at approximately 6:50, which is right after the two Girls Class Five Semifnals. The second Semifinal game, at approxitmately 8:30 pits 29-0 Lee’s Summit, a 1988 Class 4A Runner Up, against 28-2 Kickapoo, Class Five State Champions in 2003 and 2006. Winners will play for the State Title Saturday, March 19 at 4:30 while the losers play for third place Friday, March 18 at 12:45.

Last year, 2015, Chaminade and SLUH were hoping to be on a championship game collision course. Instead they met in the third-place game where Chaminade more than doubled the score on SLUH as the Red Devils romp 71-35. In the Semifinals Chaminade lost 53-50 to eventual State Runner Up Park Hill while SLUH lost 61-52 to eventual State Champion Blue Springs South.

Chaminade goes to Mizzou Arena with a 25-5 overall record and was 8-0 in winning the MCC title. All Five of the Red Devil’s losses were outside of the St. Louis area and were played outside of St. Louis. Meanwhile, SLUH goes to Columbia with a 20-9 overall record but was 3-5 in the MCC. Chaminade won 87-67 at home Dec. 9, 2015 at home and 74-62 Jan. 30 at SLUH.

After winning Class Five, District Six Chaminade rolled over Hazelwood Central 91-61 March 9 at Lindenwood University’s Robert Hyland Arena, St. Charles. Duke University-bound Jayson Tatum hit 11 out of 19 shots and made 10 out of 11 Free Throws for 33 points while Tyler Cook added 22. Chaminde got off to a 20-9 lead in the first quarter and led 63-39     after three quarters.

Chaminade returned to Lindenwood March 12 and defeated MCC rival CBC 80-61 in the Class Five Quarterfinal. It was the third meeting between these two rivals at Lindenwood and Chaminade won 76-36 Dec. 11, 2015 and 79-57 Feb. 13.

With a 49-45 lead after three quarters Chaminade put the quarterfinal game away with a 31-16 fourth quarter. Jayson Tatum, playing in front of his father, CBC coach Justin Tatum, made 14 out of 23 shots incuding three from three-point range and hit 14 out of 16 free throws for 45 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Mike Lewis II added 12 points CBC got 15 points from Christian Willis, 14 from Duane Clark and 10 each from Jordan Barnes and Kale Catchings.

SLUH, which defeated Hazelwood Central 58-47 Jan.18 at home, won Class Five, District Two at home as the Junior Billikens defeated Lindbergh 66-52 and top-seeded Webster Groves 55-39. Against Lindbergh Anthony Hughes and Brandon McKissic each scored 18 points while against Webster Groves Matt Nester scored 21 points while David Jackson added 11.

The Junior Billikens won the March 9 Sectional over Jackson 57-37 at Jefferson College, Hillsboro as Jackson scored 15 points while McKissic added 11. SLUH, before the Chaminade-CBC game won 76-51 over Wentzville-Timberland in the March 12 Quarterfinal at Lindenwood. SLUH outscored Timberland 20-5 in the second quarter and 21-12 in the fourth as McKissic scxored 24 points, Jackson scored 20 and Nester added 13.

HAZELWOOD CENTRAL, in the Sectional loss to Chaminade, got 23 points from Kansas State-bound Xavier Sneed and 11 from Shaun Williams.
