Councilman Brian Fletcher passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, Jan. 10. Fletcher, a 28-year politician, a former Country Club Hills Alderman and former mayor of Ferguson, was elected Ward 2 Councilman last April 6.
From 2005 to 2011 Fletcher served as mayor of Ferguson. He was Chairman of the “I Love Ferguson” campaign, which donated more than $130,000 to businesses damaged during civil unrest in 2014. Fletcher, who retired from AT&T, previously served as Vice President of the CWA Local at AT&T and served on Ferguson’s 4th of July committee and pension board. He spent 16 years as a Democratic committeeman and also served on the Ferguson-Florissant School District’s Board.
“Words cannot express our sorrow and pain to lose one of the true champions of the City of Ferguson,” said Ferguson Mayor James Knowles III. “During the most difficult time in our city’s history, Brian worked tirelessly and selflessly to bring people together in the spirit of a shared love for our community,” added Knowles. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family as they grieve the loss of their loved one.”
Fletcher graduated from Riverview High School. He leaves behind his wife of 34 years and two daughters. Funeral arrangements are pending.
