Hazelwoods Central, West Each Win 2 Fall Conference Titles

While there were no Missouri State High School Activities Association trophies or medals for North St. Louis County high schools Hazelwood Central and Hazelwood West each won two Suburban XII (12) Conference North Division titles.

Hazelwood Central won Suburban XII North titles in Football and Girls Volleyball while Hazelwood West won league titles in Boys Soccer and Girls Tennis dual meets.

   HAZELWOOD CENTRAL Football has won two straight Suburban XII North titles and combined with the former Suburban North Conference the Hawks have won four straight titles and has won or shared seven titles in the last eight years, sharing the 2008 title with Hazelwood West while McCluer North won in 2011. Hazelwood Central has won 26 consecutive conference games dating back to 2011.

DeMontez Clark led the Hawk offense with 25 touchdowns including 24 rushing and has 1,819 total yards including 1,722 rushing. Terran Hill three six touchdown pases, Dallas Cradieth caught four for scores and Marcello Para-Rodrigues made 34 extra-point kicks. Jordan Carey has 51 solo tackles, 89 total, Javon Kirk assisted in 40 tackles while averaging nearly 45 yards in kickoffs and nearly 28 yards in punts.

Hazelwood Central (5-0 Suburban XII North, 9-3 overall) finished as Class Six Quarterfinalists (a.k.a District Two Runner Up), losing to 2014 State Champion CBC, who plays Blue Springs South Friday, 7:30 in the championship game at Edward Jones Dome, St. Louis.

Volleyball had a 16-10-4 season but was 10-0 in Suburban XII North games and 13 of the 16 wins were against Suburban XII North rivals including Class Four, District Five wins over McCluer (25-18, 25-14) and McCluer North (25-18, 25-22). In 3 tournaments including Class Four, District Five and State the Hawks were 5-5-4 including the season-ending 25-19, 25-16 loss to Sectional Two host Fort Zumwalt East.

Mallory Meeks has 304 servs, 179 points, and 53 aces, Haney Demarea has 111 kills on 366 attempts, Victoria Jenkins has 443 assists, Briana Williams has 82 blocks (28 solo, 54 assists) and Jordan Davis has 349 service receptions and 322 digs.

   HAZELWOOD WEST Boys Soccer won 16 consecutive Suburban XII North games over two seasons while going unbeaten in winning two straight conference titles. Since 2010 and combined with the former Suburban North the Wildcats have won five out of six league titles (McCluer North won in 2013). In MSHSAA Districts the Wildcats have won 10 titles since 1987 including the last two in a row but are 0-10 in Sectionals including a 3-1 loss to eventual Class Four State Champion Francis Howell after winning District Five.

Hazelwood West (8-0 Suburban XII North, 18-7 overall) was led in goal scoring by Dillon Dorris, who had 13 goals and 11 assists for 37 points. In goalkeeping Mike Ward had a 0.94 goals against average with 94 saves in 1,108 minutes while Eric Volk’s GAA was 1.59 in 908 minutes and had 83 saves.

In Girls Tennis Hazelwood West was 11-6 overall in dual meets but was 8-0 in the Suburban XII North. Of the 11 wins 10 were against Suburban XII North rivals including Class Two, District Four matches over Hazelwood Central (5-1) and McCluer North (5-2) before losing 5-0 in the Sectional to Farmington. Prior to that Hazelwood West had advanced past districts only twice (1998, 2008) but were eliminated each year after one round.

According to internet statistics Alexis Paige was 9-3 in singles and 8-3 in doubles. Alyson Fosdick was also 8-3 in doubles. Paige won Class Two, District Four singes and qualified for Sectional competition along with the Class Two, District Four runner up doubles team of Meghan Nothdurft and Kristen White but none of them advanced.

   McCLUER NORTH SOFTBALL has won back to back Suburban XII North titles and since 2010, combining with the former Suburban North the Stars have won five conference titles in the six-year period (Hazelwood West won in 2013). While McCluer North has won 10 district titles since 1980 (state runner up in 1998) the Stars have not won districts since 2011 and was Class Four, District Five runner up to Ritenour this year.

This year McCluer North was 10-0 in the Suburban XII North, 14-7 overall.

Lauryn Hudson has 26 hits, 28 runs batted in and had a 7-2 pitching recored with 28 strikeouts. Precious Barfield was batting .463, sluggeing .741 and had an on-base percentage of .592. Aly Jones scored 29 runs including three homers and Sarah Miller walked 18 times.
