It’s awesome that the home opener for the Cardinals is on a Monday and I get to write my column on Tuesday. This gives me a great feel for the pulse of the fans of the Cards.
They did not disappoint though as the Cards hosted the biggest crowd ever at Busch Stadium for a game. The team did not fair that well especially, but I don’t think the fans minded, it’ s all about the aura of the day that is built around the game itself.
Not only is it awesome to see the fans that are going to the game be involved but it is really cool to see all of the kids in schools be able to support the team by wearing Cards merchandise. And of course many businesses allow employees to deck themselves out in red and white. So far this team looks really good, just like I had mentioned before the regular season started. Starting pitching is a key and they have not really disappointed us yet. It is an extremely long season, let’s not get to excited early though.
Best Sports Time of the Year
This is the greatest time of the year, well this and September and October. Now because the Blues are usually in the playoff hunt and the Cards are kicking off and in the Fall because the Rams are starting and the Cards are in the playoff hunt.
Really stop and think about it. We are darn lucky to live in such a great sports town. On the hockey side, I think the Blues have a real shot this year. A few returning injured players have crept back into the lineup at the right time and the net-minders have been standing on their heads lately. Playoffs start this week and hopefully I will still be writing about the boys in blue in June.
I don’t know if you saw Tiger Woods hit his shot the other day and a bone in his wrist or hand popped out of place and he just popped it back in, wow. We talk about the mental toughness of Hockey players and football players and a lot of time about the not so mental toughness of a baseball player. How about a golfer?
The unfortunate part is that several years back, he would have never missed a shot like that for that even to happen. Looking around at all sports, it is sad to see someone struggle in their sport that they dominated in for so long.
On a final note, congratulations to a friend, Dan Grumich who I have worked alongside for many years, all the way back to our days of covering high school sports in the mid ‘90s. Dan was named Athletic Director at Trinity High School. (Aquinas-Mercy) my alma mater. Dan is very deserving of the job and will be a great asset to the sports program at Trinity High School.
