North Tech Boys Basketball Wins Winfield Tournament

In their seventh appearance at the Winfield Boys Basketball Tournament, after two consolation titles and two third-place finishes, North Technical finally takes first place.

Winfield held the Boys Tournament Dec. 2,4,6 while they held the Girls Tournament Dec. 1,3,5. North Tech won Dec. 2 over North County Christian 62-26 in the first round, won Dec. 4 over St. Dominic 67-50 in the semifinals and won the championship game Dec. 6 over Wentzville-Timberland 67-53. Unlike previous years when the Winfield Tournament tips off the North Tech season this year it is their second tournament in two weeks as the Golden Eagles took third place in the Gold Division of the Borgia Tourney.

Against North County Christian Jontae Huntspon scored 16 points while Elvis Cooper pulled down 14 rebounds. Against St. Dominic Mike Henderson-Burt scored 27 points as he hit 11 out of 15 shots including four out of five from three-point range while Erik Hicks added 15 points. Against Timberland Huntspon made 10 out of 14 shots and scored 21 points, Henderson-Burt scored 19 and made 11out of 12 free throws and Tyree White had 13 points and 12 rebounds.

North Tech will play against Northwest Academy of Law Dec. 13 1 p.m. in the Eighth Annual Midwest Showdown Shootout at Vashon High. Northwest Academy was 1-3 in the Alton (Ill.) Redbird Tip-Off Classic.

TRINITY CATHOLIC took second place in their own tournament losing 65-32 Dec. 5 to Priory after winning 77-65 Dec. 1 over Metro and 69-61 Dec. 3 over Confluence Prep Academy Charter. Priory had defeated Confluence 60-33 and Metro 65-31. Confluence took third place defeating Metro 63-45.

For Trinity against Metro Keith Dockett and Broderick Ross each scored 19 points while Spencer Haynes had 14 rebounds. Against Confluence four Titans scored in double figures including 20 from Ross while Haynes had 11 rebounds. All players were held to five points or less against Priory.

McCLUER won the consolation title at the Pattonville Tournament. After losing 59-43 Dec. 1 to eventual tourney runner up St. Louis University High the Comets won 69-56 Dec. 3 over Maplewood-Richmond Heights and won 67-49 Dec. 5 over Mary Institute-Country Day School at Maryville University.

RIVERVIEW GARDENS won two and lost one in the Murphysboro, Ill. Tournament but the scheduled Dec. 3 game versus Sumner was reported to be postponed. Riverview won Dec 4 over Carterville, Ill., 70-67, while on Dec. 6 defeated Roosevelt 75-45 but lost 46-45 to Murphysboro. Riverview plays to opening game of the Midwest Showdown Shootout Dec. 13 at 11:30 a.m. against Whitfield.
