CBC Leads Class 6, District 2 Over Hazelwood Central; One Week Left

By Jim Wieners

Signs are pointing to a possible Class Six, District Two Football Final match between last year’s State Semifinalist Hazelwood Central and district runner-up (quarterfinalist) CBC as both teams are 8-0.

However, with one week left CBC, who has 500 wins since 1925 and is the Metro Catholic Conference Champion (4-0), leads Hazelwood Central, Suburban XII (12) North Conference Champions (5-0), in the district point standings for the number one seed. According to the Missouri State High School Activities Association’s complicated points formula CBC — heading to 4-4 Columbia-Rock Bridge for the Friday, Oct. 17, 7 p.m. game — has 48.82 points while Hazelwood Central — who hosts 1-7 Columbia-Hickman Saturday, Oct. 18 at 1 p.m. — has 46.36.

The number one seed will likely host a rematch with 1-7 DeSmet (Oct. 24 at CBC or Oct. 25 at Hazelwood Central). Meanwhile, the number two seed could host Francis Howell Central, Hazelwood West or Francis Howell North, each 2-6. Against DeSmet CBC won on the road 60-0 on Sept. 26 while Hazelwood Central won at home 49-24 in the Aug. 23 heat.

Points are averaged on a per game basis on win-loss record plus opponents each win-loss record (20 per win, 10 per loss, 15 per overtime loss) as well as margin of win or loss for each game up to plus or minus 13 points. Bonus Points, 10 points per each higher class divided by the number of games played, are not used in Class Six since it is the highest enrollment class.

So far CBC has scored no fewer than 47 points, no higher than 63 and the smallest win margin is 31 (52-21 over Fort Zumwalt West Sept. 6). CBC has four shutouts and has outscored Metro Catholic Conference opponents 216-16 with St. Louis University High scoring the 16.

Hazelwood Central has scored more than 35 only two times and no higher than 60, a Sept. 20 home shutout of Riverview Gardens. While their smallest win margin is two, 23-21 Sept. 6 at Eureka, the Hawks were held to a season-low 14 points Oct. 11 in a 14-0 Homecoming shutout of Hazelwood West. Mike Glass broke a scoreless tie with a one-yard quarterback sneak with 3:06 left in the fourth quarter and a Jordan Moody two-yard run in the last half minute insured the 13-point seed margin for districts.

Turnovers, including two in the Red Zone in the first quarter, and penalties, mainly offensive holding, kept Hazelwood Central off the scoreboard for 44:54.

HAZELWOOD WEST (2-6 overall, 1-4 Suburban XII North) heads to Imperial Friday for a 7 p.m. game with Seckman standing in sixth in Class Six, District Two and could have a rematch with Hazelwood Central or play at 5-2 St. Louis University High or 3-5 Ritenour. Against Central West appeared to be on their way to scoring first in the third quarter but lost the ball on a Red Zone fumble.

CLASS FIVE, DISTRICT TWO — McCLUER NORTH, HAZELWOOD EAST, Chaminade and Pattonville are each 5-3 but in the current district standings Pattonville is third, Chaminade is fourth, McCluer North is fifth and Hazelwood East is sixth. So if districts started this week McCluer North visits Chaminade and Hazelwood East visits Pattonville. McCLUER (3-5) is seventh and will play the number two seed, 8-0 Ladue or 5-1 Webster Groves, and the number one seed will get a first-round bye.

Friday at 7 p.m. McCluer North visits 4-4 Lafayette and Hazelwood East visits 6-1 and Suburban West American Conference champion Eureka. Saturday at 1 p.m. McCluer hosts Webster so a possible rematch could take place if Webster, who is now first, falls to second.

On Oct. 11 McCluer North won 46-0 at McCluer’s Homecoming while Hazelwood East won their Homecoming 41-0 over 0-8 Riverview Gardens. McCluer North had two DeMonte Morris touchdown passes and two Marvin Tate touchdown runs. Hazelwood East had four Tyrone Johnson touchdown passes to Devon Morris Touchdown.

CLASS TWO, DISTRICT FIVE — Currently 7-1 LUTHERAN NORTH leads (57.08 points), followed by 7-1 Hermann (55.32), 8-0 Brentwood (54.7), 2-6 Maplewood-Richmond Heights (38.14), 3-5 Lutheran St. Charles County (36.54), 3-5 TRINITY CATHOLIC (35.58), 1-7 Northwest Academy of Law (30.55) and 2-6 Principia (20.67). Saturday Trinity visits 6-2 Jennings at 12 noon while Lutheran North hosts 5-3 St. Mary’s at 1 p.m. On Oct 11 Lutheran North won homecoming 47-6 over Trinity as Justin Baker threw three touchdown passes, two to Brandon Sumrall, while Carl Thomas ran for two more scores
