By Jim Wieners
Over a year ago (2014) there was a realignment of the St. Louis Suburban High School Conferences and Hazelwood Central was one of six high schools that went from the Suburban North Conference to the Suburban XII (12) Conference North Division.
And for the second year in a row Hazelwood Central went 5-0 in football and swept the Suburban XII North title, after a 27-9 win Oct. 10 at Hazelwood West as DeMontez Clark ran for three touchdowns, two in the second quarter. Hazelwood Central, 6-2 overall, also has Suburban XII North wins over McCluer (53-6), Riverview Gardens (30-8), McCluer North (26-12) and Hazelwood East (40-20).
Combined with the former Suburban North Hazelwood Central has won four conference titles in a row and has won 26 confernce games in a row, dating back to 2011, and includes the current Suburban XII North plus Pattonville and Ritenour, now a part of the Suburban XII Conference South Division. Hazelwood Central’s last conference loss was Oct. 15, 2011 to McCluer North, 21-10.
Friday, Oct. 16, 7 p.m., Hazelwood Central will be in Columbia to play 0-8 Hickman, a Class Six, District Three team. Meanwhile Hazelwood Central will be at home Oct. 24 to open the Class Six, District Two Playoffs against a number six or number seven seed. Hazelwood Central (40.08 seeding points) could secure the number two seed with a win but 6-2 St. Lous University High (39.25) could overtake the Hawks if the Junior Billikens beat visiting Class Six, District One leader Kirkwood (7-0), Friday, 7 p.m., and SLUH gets more help than Central.
Defending State Champion CBC (8-0. 48.8 points) will be the top seed in Class Six, District Two.
HAZELWOOD WEST (1-4 Suburban XII North, 2-5) will be at home Saturday Oct. 17, 1 p.m. against 1-7 Seckman — a Class Six, District One team from Imperial (Jefferson County). Hazelwood West (20.77) is competing for the sixth and seventh seeds in Class Six, District Two against Francis Howell Central (2-6, 21 points), who is hosting a Class Six, District One Rockwood School, Marquette, Friday, 7 p.m.
CLASS FIVE, DISTRICT TWO — HAZELWOOD EAST will open district play at home Oct. 24 but will not be the top seed, which carries a first-round bye, since 7-1 Chaminade (50.91 points) has that all but locked up. That means Hazelwood East (4-1, 5-3) will be playing a team for the second time this season — against 3-5 McCluer North (East won 40-16 Sept.12), 3-5 McCluer (East won 42-6, Sept. 19) or 2-5 Webster Groves (East lost 13-12 Aug. 29).
Hazelwood East (38.09) is competing against two other 5-3 teams, Pattonville (41.44) and Ladue-Horton Watkins (36.4), for seeds, two, three and four. East is at home Saturday, 1 p.m. against a Class Six, District One Rockwood School, Suburban West Conference American Division Champion Eureka (7-0), Pattonville hosts Class Six, Disrict One Mehlville (3-5). Friday, 7 p.m. and Ladue hosts Class Four, District Three St. Charles West Saturday, 1 p.m.
Hazelwood East secured second place in the Suburban XII North with a 61-14 win at Class Four, District Three Riverview Gardens (0-5, 0-8), who plays Friday, 7 p.m at Cape Girardeau Central. Malik Scott scored five touchdowns, four rushing, for East while Jay Kirk passed for a touchdown and ran for another.
McCLUER NORTH (31.92) will be the fifth seed in Class Five, District Two following a 43-0 home rout over McCluer and the Stars will host still another Class Six, District One Rockwood School, 5-3 Lafayette, Saturday at 1 p.m.. McCLUER (24.89) visits Webster Groves (23.47) Friday, 7 p.m., with the winner getting the number six seed and the loser will be seventh.
CLASS TWO, DISTRICT FIVE — TRINITY CATHOLIC (6-2) and LUTHERAN NORTH (4-4) will each open district play at home but the 40-14 win Oct. 9 by Lutheran North (50.11) over Trinity (47.84) means that the Titans will not get the top seed and first-round bye nor can they be seeded second. Trinity will host Class Four, District Three Jennings (3-5) Friday 7 p.m. and the Titans are battling 5-3 Hermann (46.99) for seeds three (which means playing Northwest Academy of Law or Principia) and four (which means hosting Lutheran St. Charles), and Hermann hosts 2-6 Union Friday.
Lutheran North visits Class Four, District Two St. Mary’s (1-7) Friday, 7 p.m. needing a win and help from Lutheran North opponents for the top seed since 8-0 Brentwood (55.57) plays District Two Cleveland NJROTC (1-7) Saturday, 1:30, at the former Southwest High School field, St. Louis.
Aqeel Glass threw to Jordan Sommerville for two Lutheran North touchdowns while Donovan Marshall ran for two first half touchdowns. Darries Rainey ran for two second-half Trinity Touchdowns.
