Hazelwood Police Explorers Win at 2014 National Law Enforcement Conference
Five members of the Hazelwood Police Department’s Explorers Post #9217 brought home some awards from their participation at this year’s National Law Enforcement Explorers Conference. The Hazelwood Explorers Post is the only one from the St. Louis area that won two separate award plaques.
During the week of July 13-19, they participated in this National Conference at Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind. Members who went on the trip included Explorer Capt. Makil Walker, Explorer Sgt. Nicholas Mettes, Explorer Tanner Kistner, Explorer Craig Seaward, and Explorer Katelynn Eagan. Police department advisors who escorted the group were P.O. William Russ and Disp. James Ervin.
They were among an estimated 2,500 explorers from more than 500 explorer programs in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico who attended the event, which is held every other year.
For the volleyball tournament, all five Hazelwood Police Explorers (Post 9217) teamed up with three St. Louis County Police Explorers (Post 9774). They competed against 32 other teams and won first-place with the final score of 18-25 during the championship match.
The “Burglary in Progress” team of Explorer Sgt. Nicholas Mettes and Explorer Craig Seaward competed against approximately 120 other teams in this competition category. They ended up as the fifth-place winners with a final score of 98%, and received a beautiful plaque to add to the Post’s collection of trophies and awards.
“We are very proud of our department’s Police Explorers and how well they did at this year’s National Conference,” Hazelwood Police Chief Gregg Hall said. “The hard work and the personal time they sacrificed to train for this event paid off with not one but two impressive award plaques. They did an exemplary job representing the City of Hazelwood.”
Hazelwood Police Explorers Post #9217 is looking for a few good young men and women, between the ages of 14 and 21 as new members. They will be hosting an Open House on Thursday, September 25, at the Hazelwood Police Station inside City Hall, 415 Elm Grove Lane, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. To qualify as a member, individuals must be at least 14 years old (8th grade graduate), maintain a 2.0 GPA in school, and have no felonies or major misdemeanor convictions.
Some of the many activities Explorers do include ride-alongs with uniformed officers, going through police training drills, learning court procedures, assisting with City events, and attending bi-annual academies and conferences.
