Children participating in this year’s Hazelwood Summer Day Camp were pleasantly surprised on the opening day of camp when popular St. Louis Cardinals mascot Fredbird showed up for a visit. He arrived with a kickball in hand ready for some fun.
The children gave Fredbird high-fives and hugs and danced with him outside the pavilion at Howdershell Park. Fredbird selected two teams to play a game of kickball. He was the All-Star pitcher for both teams, but he didn’t have much luck with his kicking since the kids threw him out twice. The game ended in a tie with everyone in a good mood about Fredbird’s appearance. After the game, all the Day Camp participants posed for photos and said their good-byes to Fredbird before he left to go do his other job of leading the cheers for St. Louis Cardinals’ fans at Busch Stadium.
Although the Hazelwood Summer Day Camp started on June 2, it’s not too late for last-minute sign-ups for parents who want to register their kids. Youngsters must be between the ages of six and eleven. Participants will enjoy sports, games, crafts, swimming at Hazelwood’s Aquatic Center, and visits to Musick Park’s Sprayground.
