Off District Baseball;

Overtimes Win Soccer

McCluer North took advantage of home field in Baseball as the Stars capped off a seventh inning rally against Hazelwood Central to win Class Five, District Five, while Girls Soccer won a pair of overtime games to win Class Four, District Five at Ritenour Soccer Complex. The state sectionals were played Tuesday (weather permitting) prior to our print deadline.

North hosted DeSmet Jesuit in Class Five Baseball and the Stars took on Francis Howell Central in Class Four Girls Soccer. Those Sectional Games were on May 21. McCluer North or DeSmet plays Francis Howell High or Columbia-Rock Bridge Thursday, May 23 while McCluer North or Francis Howell Central plays Francis Howell or Columbia-Hickman Saturday, May 25.

Quarterfinal winners play May 31-June 1 in State Tournaments. State Baseball is at Car Shield Field, formerly T.R. Hughes Ballpark, O’Fallon, home of the frontier League’s River City Rascals. State Girls Soccer is at Swope Soccer Village, Kansas City

   BASEBALL — McCluer North capped off a five-run seventh inning with a walk-ff two run double by sophomore Jaylen Whitfield, his second of the game to defeat Hazelwood Central 10-9 in the May 17 Class Five, District Five Final. The district title is the Stars’ eighth since 1989 but the first since 2005.

Senior Desmond Woods scored three runs while junior Alex Henagean struck out seven. Junior Will Parkerson, winning pitcher, got the final out of the top of the seventh after Hazelwood Central scored six times after two out.

On May 14, McCluer North shuts out Ritenour 10-0, called after four and one half

innings due to the Mercy Rule. Woods — scoring three runs and driving in three on three hits, including a double and a triple — helped the Stars to an 8-0 lead through two innings Junior Anthony Benz struck out eight in a complete game win.

GIRLS SOCCER — McCluer North, Suburban Green Pool Champions, pulled off overtimes wins over Hazelwood Central, 2-1 on May 13 and Hazelwood West, 3-2 on May 15. It is the Stars’ fourth district title since 1985. Junior Kira McGrellis scored in the third minute of overtime past Hazelwood Central junior goalkeeper Raquel Henderson, who made 14 saves.

Against top-seeded Hazelwood West, avenging an April 3-1 road loss, junior Skyla Koch scored two first half goals and senior goalkeeper Karina DuFour made 20 saves. However, freshman Jahia Qualls’ goal in the fourth minute of overtime won, after Hazelwood West tied it in the second half.

   INCARNATE WORD ACADEMY played two Mercy Rule shutouts at Riverview Gardens to win Class Three, District Five, their 37th-consecutive district title including 35 in a row sanctioned by the Missouri State High School Activities Association. In the 14-0, half game May 13 against Riverview 12 players scored including two goals by Izzy Patterson and Rachel Peterson. In the 10-0 41-minute game against McCluer, five players scored including three goals by Olivia Layton.

IWA was at Westminster Christian Academy May 21 and the winner plays Saturday against St. Dominic or Lake St. Louis-based Liberty for the right to play at Swope Soccer village May 31-June 1.
