BY JIM WIENERS
Four weeks after a 42-yard field goal by Alex Beckman led McCluer North to a 31-30 win at Hazelwood Central the two teams will get to meet again although this Saturday, 1:30, the loser is eliminated from the post-season playoffs.
McCluer North will host Hazelwood Central this Saturday in the Class Six Quarterfinals with the winner playing next weekend against Fox (Arnold) or Oakville. A McCluer North win means possibly playing at home against Oakville next Saturday or at Fox next Friday while a Hazelwood Central win means going home next Saturday regardless of opponent.
“It’s going to be tough,” said McCluer North veteran head coach Jim Schottmueller. “They (Hazelwood Central has) got a plethora of athletes.”
McCluer North is 6-5 but have won four out of their last five including last Saturday at home over Lafayette, 23-14, on an very cloudy and chilly day in front of a sparse crowd. McCluer North led at halftime 23-0 and the Stars had to withstand a 14-point rally early in the third quarter by Lafayette. “Anytime you win a game in the playoffs, it’s huge,” said Schottmueller.
Hazelwood Central is taking their 9-2 record to McCluer North and the Hawks had already lost to the Stars four weeks ago. However Hazelwood Central head coach Richard Nixon said “if we come out and play four quarters of mistake-free football we’re hard to beat.” Last Friday before a large crowd in Chesterfield Rockwood-Marquette scored first and last Hazelwood Central scored 42 unanswered points including two touchdown passes and a one-yard run by quarterback Kerry Gibson resulted in a 42-12 Hawk win.
HAZELWOOD EAST will be traveling to South Central Missouri this Saturday to play at defending Class Five State Champion Waynesville in a 1:30 Quarterfinal game. After a regional bye Hazelwood East, 8-3 won last Monday in a Class Five Sectional over Kirkwood, 26-14 at Ritenour’s Moore Field. Waynesville, 7-4. also had a Regional bye and is coming off a 41-14 home win last Monday over McCluer, who had upset previously Wentzville-Timberland, 35-28 in overtime Nov. 5.
The Hazelwood East-Waynesville winner will play Eureka or Jackson Nov. 21 (or 22 if East has a home game). Site of the game will be available after this Saturday.
McCLUER SOUTH-BERKELEY will also be traveling to South Central Missouri this Saturday for a Class Three Quarterfinal game, 1:30 at Sullivan. The winner plays Nov. 22 against New Madrid County Central or Cardinal Ritter, site to be named after this Saturday.
McCluer South-Berkeley — who defeated Trinity Catholic, 62-15, and Lutheran North, 26-0, to win Class Three, District Five, improved to 9-3 by beating Bowling Green, 44-6, in the Regional round and Washington-St. Francis Borgia, 34-13 in the Sectionals.
