The Hazelwood Police Department will be assisting the North St. Louis County Municipal Police Chiefs Association in sponsoring a Citizen Police Academy for residents living in the North County area.
Classes are scheduled to begin on Thursday, Feb. 6, for a 12-week period. Selected participants will be meeting once a week on Thursday nights from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the St. Louis Outlet Mall, formerly known as the St. Louis Mills. Applications will be accepted up to Jan. 10, or until the class size of 50 is reached. Those submitting applications must get approval from the police chief of their municipality.
The goal of the Citizen Police Academy is to break down the barrier between the police and the citizen. This is an opportunity for citizens to meet local police officers and interact with law enforcement agencies. Most people are not aware of the numerous services provided by their local police department to ensure the safety of the community and its citizens.
The Citizen Police Academy will familiarize participants in the following areas: History of Law Enforcement, Duties of Police Officers, How Calls are Handled, Drugs, Gangs & Cults, Criminal Law, Crime Scene Procedures, Investigations, Complaints and Reports, Juvenile Procedures/Child Abuse, Use of Firearms, Special Weapons and Tactics, Emergency Situations, and K-9.
Classes will be taught by law enforcement officers. Applications can be picked up at the Hazelwood Police Department or at other participating law enforcement agencies in the North County area. They can also be downloaded from the City of Hazelwood’s website at www.hazelwoodmo.org.
All applicants must submit to a background check and police record check. The North County Municipal Police Chiefs Association and the Hazelwood Police Department will select all participants. For more information, call Sgt. Doug McGarry, HPD’s N.A.T. Supervisor, at (314) 513-5208.
