Hazelwood Employees Show Their Cardinals’ Spirit With Food Drive for TEAM

To celebrate the St. Louis Cardinals as participants in this year’s World Series, the City of Hazelwood’s employees made donations to local food pantries and wore Cardinal red to work.

Many of Hazelwood’s 189 full-time employees showed their spirit for the St. Louis Cardinals on Opening Day of the 2013 World Series with a “Cardinals’ Red Dress Down Day and Food Collection Drive.” Employees who brought in a food donation for area food pantries could wear their Cardinals’ gear for the day. This sparked a tremendous response from the City’s workforce, with collection boxes filled to the brim and a sea of red coloring every office area.

“We’re very proud of the generosity displayed by our City employees with the overwhelming response we received for the food collection drive, which helps needy families in our community who rely on services provided by area food pantries,” said Mayor Matthew G. Robinson of Hazelwood. “It also reflects our employees’ hometown pride in the St. Louis Cardinals for making it to the World Series, and their dedication to improving the quality of life for local residents.”

With the addition of Civic Center East, located at 8969 Dunn Road, the City of Hazelwood now has two collection sites for the The Emergency Assistance Ministry (TEAM) Food Pantry.  The other site is Hazelwood’s Fire Station #2, 6800 Howdershell Road, next to Howdershell Park. A container clearly marked with a TEAM poster has been placed at both locations near the front entrance for people to drop off their food donations.

“There are people out there in our own city, and in surrounding communities, who are still struggling to make ends meet and rely on assistance in order to put food on the table for their families and themselves. Inventories at local food pantries, like the one provided by TEAM, are running seriously low. We encourage everyone to make it a habit of dropping off food donations at TEAM collection sites all year round and not just during the holidays.”

Sponsored by more than 30 churches in the Hazelwood and Florissant area, TEAM is a volunteer organization tasked with the mission of serving the poor and hungry in the Hazelwood and Florissant areas.  It provides supplemental food and basic household items to needy families that qualify for assistance on a once-a-month basis.  The main office is located at 265 St. Catherine Street in Florissant.  Hours of operation are: Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.

TEAM relies on the generous support of the public, as well as the Foodbank, Operation Food Search, and several local business/school/civic organizations. Clients are provided with basic items such as meat, canned goods, vegetables, fruits, pasta and bakery products once a month.  Household supplies such cleaning products, personal care items and basic infant supplies are distributed as well.
