Hawks Take 6-0 Record East (bound) Against Arch-Rival 4-2 Spartans

Hazelwood Central will be taking their high-powered offense (about 43.5 points per game) and their unbeaten record (4-0 Suburban North Conference, 6-0 overall) to Gorzynski Field Saturday, Oct. 12, as the Hawks battle the Hazelwood East Spartans (3-1, 4-2) in a 1 p.m. Suburban North Conference showdown.
This will be one of a majority of area High School Football games that will be played at 1 p.m. Saturday. The only exception will be in the Archdiocesan Athletic Association Small Division as Trinity Catholic (2-1 AAA-SD, 3-3) host O’Fallon Christian (3-0, 6-0) Friday, Oct. 11, 7 p.m. in conference finale.
Other Suburban North games include McCluer North (2-2 SNC, 3-3) at Riverview Gardens (1-3, 3-3), Hazelwood West (1-3, 2-4) at McCluer (0-4, 1-5) and Ritenour (3-1, 5-1) at Pattonville (2-2, 2-4). Elsewhere Lutheran North (2-4) plays their home finale against Principia (4-1) while in the Suburban East Conference finale McCluer South-Berkeley (3-1 Suburban East, 5-1) plays their home finale against Normandy (1-3, 2-4).
HAZELWOOD CENTRAL remains unbeaten against Ritenour since Hazelwood High became Hazelwood Central in 1974 as the Hawks dealt the Huskies their first (and so fan only) loss, 42-27, then had to hold off Pattonville, 56-47, as the two teams combined to score 113 points, usually found in some High School Basketball games. In the wins over Ritenour and Pattonville Kevin Batt carried the ball 73 times (44 against Pattonville) for a combined total of 589 yards (337 against Pattonville) and seven touchdowns (five against Pattonville). Meanwhile Mike Glass, against Ritenour and Pattonville, threw for two touchdowns in each of the two games while running for three touchdowns (two against Ritenour).
HAZELWOOD EAST was a 36-18 home winner over Riverview Gardens but then lost 31-30 at McCluer North. The Spartans loss to the Stars overshadowed the efforts of Jimmy Jones, who returned six kickoffs for 250 yards and touchdowns of 90, 92 and 94 yards while running the ball 13 times for 174 yards and two touchdowns including one for 90 yards. Against Riverview Gardens Ahmad Huddleston overcame a 12-9 Rams halftime lead with a 66-yard punt return for a touchdown then ran for two more second-half scores
TRINITY CATHOLIC exploded for road victories at John F. Kennedy, 70-6 in a late afternoon game on Sept. 27, and at Lutheran-St. Charles County (St. Peters), 63-20 despite two delays lasting nearly one hour as the field lights went out each time. Each score is higher than the first four games combined as the 70 and 63 points each are among the largest in Trinity history, which began in August, 2003 after the St. Thomas Aquinas-Mercy-Rosary merger.
Corey Patterson had two big scoring games totaling 11 touchdowns. Against Kennedy Patterson ran for three touchdowns, caught a touchdown pass, threw a touchdown pass and returned an intercepted pass for another score. Against Lutheran-St. Charles he ran for three more touchdowns, caught another touchdown pass, threw another touchdown pass and ran for a two-point conversion. Meanwhile Demontez Clark, in the last two games carried the ball 22 times (13 against Lutheran-St. Charles County) for a combined 411 yards (227 against Kennedy) and six touchdowns (four against Lutheran St. Charles).
McCLUER NORTH found different ways to win as the Stars won at home over Hazelwood West, 13-6, and Hazelwood East. Tevin Miller ran for a pair of first-half touchdowns against Hazelwood West and that stood up for the Stars against the Wildcats. Against Hazelwood East the Stars relied on place-kicker Max Pauley, who booted three field goals including a 38-yarder with 1:40 left in the fourth quarter that put the Stars up 31-30 and that score stood up in the end.
HAZELWOOD WEST finally won big, as in winning margin, a 60-0 home victory over Riverview Gardens a week after losing at McCluer North. The 60 points are more than the previous six games combined, five this season and last season’s first-round Class Six, District Two loss at Hazelwood Central. The 60 points are the most since the Wildcats won at Hazelwood East, 61-42, on Sept. 19, 2009. Terrance Dominick, who carried the ball 11 times for 108 yards, Adrian Brown, who carried the ball seven times for 180 yards, and Christian Croft scored two ‘Cat touchdowns each.
