The Ferguson-Florissant School District Board of Education  honored the achievements of students and staff at its monthly meeting on April 10.

“The Ferguson-Florissant School District is proud of the achievements of its many talented students and staff,” said Supt. Art McCoy. “We are pleased to acknowledge their efforts and share their successes with the community.”

The following students and staff were honored:

Top students from each grade level at each elementary and middle school in the District competed against one another in the Grade Level Spell-Off Feb. 25 at the Administration Center.  The winners for each grade level are: Sarah Mueller, fourth grade, Parker Road Elementary School; Alex Ward, fifth grade, Parker Road Elementary School; Delaney Jones, sixth grade, Duchesne Elementary School; Isaac Orbin, seventh grade, Cross Keys Middle School; and Walter Shannon, eighth grade, Ferguson Middle School.

Cross Keys Middle School seventh-grader Isaac Orbin is the Ferguson-Florissant School District’s 2013 Spelling Bee champion. Isaac won the District’s Championship Spelling Bee on Feb. 26. He went on to the Greater St. Louis Spelling Bee semi-finals and then to the finals where he placed sixth out of 33 competitors from throughout the metropolitan area.  This is Isaac’s third year as winner of the District Bee.  He also was the top speller in 2011 and 2012.

Students from all 17 Ferguson-Florissant School District elementary schools competed in the District’s annual Scholar Bowl competition in late March.  The competition consisted of four challenges: one which required students to solve picture and logic puzzles, two which required competitors to develop winning strategies and strong math skills to win games, and a final challenge in which teams answered academic questions in a Jeopardy-style format.

The first place team for 2013 is the team from Commons Lane Elementary School: Anthony Anger, Joshua Geisler, Julian Hays, Leah Hodges, Carly Parr, Cyrus Riddle and Mitchell Sanderson, coached by counselor Julie Frankel. The strongest individual players from each of the school teams also competed against one another to quickly and correctly answer academic questions in all curricular areas. The first place individual champion for 2013 is Delaney Jones of the Duchesne Elementary School team, coached by sixth-grade teacher Robin Hillar.

McCluer South-Berkeley High School band director Mr. Terrell Stringer received the Educator of the Year Award on March 3 at the sixth annual St. Louis Traffic Music Awards.  The Traffic Music Awards are presented annually to local honorees in music and entertainment, business, politics and education and are given on the basis of number of votes received. Students and staff at McCluer South-Berkeley cast votes in recognition of Mr. Stringer’s hard work and dedication as the school’s band director.

Two Duchesne Elementary School sixth grade students received first and second place honors in the Iota Phi Lambda Sorority’s 2013 Black History Essay Contest.  Tionee Ellis was awarded first place and received a $100 prize.  DeJa Lane was awarded second place and received a $75 prize.  Tionee and DeJa presented their winning essays on March 16.
