McCluer North Football is in the middle of a three-week break from Suburban North Conference competition but being in a five-team district — Class Five, District Two. The Stars also take a break from district football this Saturday while the majority of Missouri high schools begin their shot at post-season playoff competition this weekend.
At 1 p.m. McCluer North (7-0 overall, 6-0 SNC, 2-0 +26 Class Five, District Two) hosts Roosevelt in a rematch of last year’s Class Five Quarterfinals won by the Stars, 42-7. “It’s strange (playing a non-district game) in the middle of districts but it’s something we have to do,” said McCluer North head coach Jim Schottmueller last Saturday after the Stars trounced winless Wentzville Holt, 55-7. Roosevelt, who Schottmueller said would be a challenge, takes a break from Class Five, District Three but, after winning the first six games, the Rough Riders lost last Saturday at home to Chaminade, 21-7.
Last Saturday McCluer North scored 49 unanswered points in the first half as Ben Hendrix threw four touchdown passes, two to Norris Johnson, who also returned an intercepted pass 100 yards for another score. The second half saw the second team players and more on the gridiron and “a lot of kids played,” said Schottmueller. “It was a good day.”
CLASS SIX, DISTRICT FOUR — Hazelwood West (2-5, 2-2 SNC) at Riverview Gardens (4-3, 2-2) Friday, 6 p.m. — Hazelwood Central (6-1, 3-1) at Pattonville (5-2, 2-2), Friday, 7 p.m. — Hazelwood West is coming off a 42-0 home loss to Francis Howell Central last Saturday while Riverview Gardens whitewashed Sumner, 40-0 at Soldan.
Hazelwood Central is coming off their second straight win at Hazelwood East last Saturday as DeVion Moore scored two touchdowns while Pattonville is coming off a 42-19 win last Friday at 0-7 Ritenour, who
now heads to Class Six, District Two.
CLASS FIVE, DISTRICT TWO — BOTH SATURDAY, 1 p.m. — Troy Buchanan (0-7, 0-1 -13 districts) at Hazelwood East (6-1, 4-1 SNC, 1-0 +13 districts) — McCluer (2-5, 1-5 SNC, 1-1 0 districts) at Wentzville-Holt (0-7, 0-2 -26 districts) — Hazelwood East returns to districts, but the Spartans loss to Hazelwood Central assures McCluer North of finishing no worse than sharing first in the Suburban North Conference. McCluer, who has split their first two district games, is coming off a 52-0 rout of Troy Buchanan, in their first district game, while Wentzville-Holt has been outscored 104-7 in losses to McCluer North and Hazelwood East.
CLASS THREE, DISTRICT FIVE — Cardinal Ritter (3-4, 3-2 Archdiocesan Athletic Association) at Trinity Catholic (3-4, 2-3 AAA) Friday, 7 p.m. — McCluer South-Berkeley (1-5, 0-5 Suburban East Conference) at Lutheran North (5-2, 4-2 ABC League) Saturday, 1 p.m. — All four teams are coming off losses last week — Cardinal Ritter to Washington-St. Francis Borgia (38-7), Trinity Catholic to St. Mary’s (40-24), McCluer South to Clayton (34-18) and Lutheran North to Mary Institute-Country Day School (30-20). Ritter and Trinity wrap up AAA play, McCluer South-Berkeley finished sixth in the Suburban East and Lutheran North is currently third in the ABC League.
