Incarnate Word Academy is venturing into two uncharted situations and so far, so good after wining Girls Basketball districts last week and Soldan-International Studies High School.
For the first time IWA is competing as a Class Four School. Before the Missouri State High School Activities Association went to a Five-Class Basketball format and instituted a 1.35 multiplier for private schools IWA was in Class 3A. Since then, and through last year, IWA was in Class Five but their enrollment dropped the school to Class Four Basketball
Second IWA is unbeaten prior to March 6, as the Red Knights took a 27-0 record to the Sectional round game against Mary Institute-Country Day School at Parkway West. A Red Knight win would send them to the Class Four Quarterfinal game March 9, 2:45 at Francis Howell Central, Cottleville, against St. Dominic or Kirksville for the right to play in the state tournament, March 14-16 at Mizzou Arena, Columbia.
Incarnate Word won Class Four District Five at Soldan by defeating McCluer South-Berkeley, 81-31 on Feb. 26, and Miller Career Academy, 82-62 on March 1. IWA has won 24 District or Regional titles since 1974 and is aiming to win their fifth state title. Two times IWA has lost only one game in winning a pair of Class Five titles (2006, 2010).
Napheesa Collier has averaged 25.5 points per game (23 against McCluer South-Berkeley and 28 against Miller Career Academy) and 11 rebounds per game. Nia Roth scored 18 against McCluer South-Berkeley, McKenna Treece scored 15 against Miller Career Academy and Nakiah Bell had 12 rebounds to go along with 12 points against Miller Career Academy.
