McCluer North, Hazelwood East Win Girls Prep Basketball Tournaments

Mid January for McCluer North and Hazelwood East High Schools meant playing in their third Girls Basketball Tournaments at private high schools and last week both schools each took first place.

In Kirkwood McCluer North won the Ursuline Academy Tournament in dominating fashion. The Stars, in Pool A, rolled past Fort Zumwalt South, 66-38, and John F. Kennedy, 67-32, while last Friday in the Championship game McCluer North pulls away from host Ursuline, 69-40. North had taken second place in the Suburban North Conference Tournament, to Hazelwood Central, and took second during the Christmas break in the McCluer South-Berkeley Tournament, to host MS-Berkeley.
“We’ve been playing pretty good Basketball,” said McCluer North head coach Bob Pechloff. North’s win over Ursuline by 29 points was done without two starters, Rhonda Fox and Kaci Cason so “other girls stepped it up,” said Pechloff.

In Ladue Hazelwood East won their third straight John Burroughs Invitational Tournament. In Group B pool play Hazelwood East rolled past Lutheran-St. Charles County, 69-39, and host Burroughs, 61-24 while last Saturday the Spartans edged past Miller Career Academy, 51-49. East was fourth in the Suburban North Tournament, held at Hazelwood West, and was fourth during the Christmas Break at the Duchesne Tournament, in St. Charles, ending a string of Duchesne Tournament wins at three.

Prior to the Burroughs Tournament East (11-6 Overall, 1-1 Suburban North Conference prior to Jan. 22) played short-handed the first 13 games and was 7-6. McCluer North (15-4, 2-0 SNC) defeated East two times. The John Burroughs Invitational games were the first for the Spartans with a full squad. “We had a lot of injuries,” said Hazelwood East head coach Terry Creamer, who also mentioned a couple of players had academic problems and also said that “we have to keep up with these athletes in academics.”

In the Ursuline Tournament for McCluer North against Fort Zumwalt South Terika Adams scored 15 points Bianca Lockette had 13 rebounds and Dahlia Booker had six assists. Against Kennedy Terika Adams had 19 points and seven steals, Tarah Adams had 14 points and 11 rebounds and Fox had five assists. Against Ursuline Terika Adams scored 21 points, Tarah Adams added 20 while pulling down 16 rebounds, Booker scored 16 and Brandi Reed had five assists.

In the John Burroughs Tournament for Hazelwood East against Lutheran-SC Robniesha Wood scored 18 points while Artiesha Berry added 15 and Ora Spivey had four assists. Against Burroughs Molly Apela, who had 12 points, and Wood, who scored 10 each had four steals, Berry had 10 rebounds and Leslie Damper had six assists. Against Miller Career Academy Wood scored 10 points, had six assists and three steals.
