DeSmet Stuns CBC, Hosts Blue Springs In Class Six State Football Semifinals

DeSmet Jesuit High School surprised high school football followers outside their high school by upsetting the state’s top ranked team, formerly undefeated CBC, 56-35, Nov. 9 at CBC to win the Class Six, District Two title.

The win advances the 9-3 Spartans to the Nov. 16, 7 p.m. State Semifinal game as DeSmet hosts 11-1 Blue Springs. The winner advances to play a first-time State Finalist, Lafayette or Francis Howell, in the Class Six Championship game, Nov. 24, 5:30 p.m. at the Edward Jones Dome, St. Louis, to close out the 2012 football season.

DeSmet visited Blue Springs in the 2009 Class Six Semifinals and the Wildcats knocked off the previously undefeated Spartans, 35-5. A week later in 2009 Blue Springs lost to Hazelwood Central, 35-24, in the Class Six Championship game giving the Hawks their second straight title.

DeSmet capped off the upset with a 28-14 fourth-quarter after the Spartans outscored the Cadets, 14-7 in, the second and third quarters each. Conner Harrison had four touchdown passes, three to Alec Bausch, while Dedrick Cromartie and Joey Bruning each returned fourth-quarter interceptions for touchdowns.

Aarion Penton scored four touchdowns for 11-1 CBC which gave up 28 points in the fourth quarter for the second game in a row. In the Class Six, District Two Semifinal win over Ritenour, 54-35, Nov 3 Ritenour outscored CBC, 28-27 in the fourth quarter.
