Hawks, Comets Meet To Decide SNC Title, Districts Next Week

Week Nine of the 2012 High School Football Season is the final tune-up for the district playoffs, which replaces week 10 under the new MSHSAA State Qualifying System, which all varsity teams in the state play in the “win or go home” games.
However, there is unfinished business at the top of the Suburban North Conference. Hazelwood Central (6-0 Suburban North, 6-2) takes a six-game winning streak home Saturday, Oct. 20, in a 1 p.m. game against McCluer (5-1, 7-1), which carries a six-game winning streak to Central.
Despite the district point system too complex to mention, the Hawks (in Class Six, District Two) and the Comets (Class Five, District Two) are currently second in their districts so the winner will assure themselves no worse than getting the second seed. Hazelwood Central can not get the top seed because CBC (8-0) has too many points for the Hawks to catch while McCluer has a chance to nab the Class Five, District Two top seed, and first-round bye, but will need University City (4-4) to pull off a big-time upset of 7-0 Kirkwood.
Hazelwood Central, who is coming off a 24-8 win Oct. 13 at Riverview Gardens, is assured of no worse than sharing the Suburban North title but a Hawk win can seal the SNC title outright. McCluer, who won a 26-23 home nail-biter over Ferguson-Florissant School District rival McCluer North, can share the SNC title but take the head-to-head tiebreaker with a win.
A Hazelwood Central loss could drop the Hawks to third with a DeSmet win over Vashon or to fourth with a DeSmet win and a Ritenour win over Riverview Gardens. A McCluer loss and a Webster Groves rout of Parkway North may send McCluer down to the third seed.
McCLUER SOUTH-BERKELEY — On a four-game winning streak after a 1-3 start McCluer South-Berkeley, currently third in Class Three, District Five and should have no problem securing that seed with a home win Oct. 20 at 1 p.m. over College Preparatory High at Madison, a St. Louis Charter School (if they still have a team). The Bulldogs could go as high as second with a win and a Duchesne loss to Westminster Christian Academy and could get a top seed but need a loss by 7-1 O’Fallon Christian to winless Lift for Life Academy Charter.
HAZELWOOD EAST — Having an opportunity to nab a number two seed in Class Five, District Two dashed with back-to-back losses to Hazelwood Central two weeks ago and to Ritenour, 26-14 on Oct. 13, has the Spartans down to the fourth seed. Hazelwood East could get back up to a number three seed with a win Oct. 20 in a 2 p.m. contest at Hazelwood West and a Parkway North win over Webster Groves.
LUTHERAN NORTH — Despite a 3-5 record and securing a third straight win at home Oct. 13 over Trinity Catholic, 42-21, Lutheran North’s strength of schedule has the Crusaders seeded forth. LHSN can secure that seed in Class Two, District Two and a first-round home game with a home win Oct. 20 but the Crusaders face 6-2 St. Mary’s at 1 p.m. and a Lutheran North loss and a Herculaneum win over Perryville could send the Crusaders to Herculaneum.
McCLUER NORTH — The 2-6 Stars are currently seeded fifth in Class Five, District Two, after losing at McCluer, and could secure that seed, and a possible rematch with Hazelwood East with a home win Oct. 20, 1 p.m. against 1-7 Pattonville. A loss and a Chaminade win over Poplar Bluff could drop the Stars to the fifth seed.
HAZELWOOD WEST — With an 0-8 record and a 13-game losing streak dating back to last year the Wildcats host Hazelwood East Oct. 20 at 2 p.m. hoping to avoid falling to the number eight seed in Class Six, District Two and an Oct. 26 visit to CBC. A loss to East and a win by 0-8 Francis Howell North over Washington, Mo., could send Hazelwood West to CBC. The Wildcats 22-14 road loss Oct. 13 gave Pattonville their first win.
TRINITY CATHOLIC — Suffering through a 2-6 season the Titans will likely be the number six seed in Class Three, District Five regardless of the outcome of the Friday, Oct. 19 home game against Confluence Prep Academy Charter.
RIVERVIEW GARDENS — After losing Oct. 13 at home to Hazelwood Central, Riverview Gardens (3-5) is currently seeded seventh in a seven-team Class Five, District Two but could move up to the sixth seed with a win Oct. 19, 7 p.m. at 5-3 Ritenour. and a Chaminade loss to Poplar Bluff.
