Trinity Catholic Soccer Moves To Class One, But Whitfield Is A District Obstacle

For the second time since the Missouri State High School Activities Association made Boys Soccer a Three-Class Sport (2002) Trinity Catholic (which began its existence in 2003) moved from Class Two to Class Three a year after taking second to undefeated Priory (2005, 2011).
But when MSHSAA released district assignments last weekend Trinity was assigned to Class One, District Four. Trinity, who was 21-7 last year, is not expected to receive any challenges this year from Lutheran North or North Tech. However, when Whitfield — a private, non-denominational West County school, was assigned to District Four advancing to Sectionals for Trinity could be tough. Whitfield, despite finishing 5-20 last year, has dominated Class One Boys Soccer with seven state titles in 10 years.
Moving to a smaller class and not advance past districts is not new. After moving to Class One in 2006 Trinity lost to John Burroughs in the district finals in two years including 2007 and the Titans lost to Burroughs in the 2008 state championship game. Trinity is looking to win their first state title in any sport but among Trinity’s predecessors St. Thomas-Aquinas and Aquinas-Mercy combined to win 11 Boys State Soccer titles, all under current Trinity athletic director/head coach Vince Drake, while Rosary won five.
Trinity opens the 2012 season at home Aug. 29, 6:30, against Winfield, a small public high school from that Lincoln County town. The Titans will get to play Whitfield on Oct. 20, over a week before districts and on Sept. 11 Trinity welcomes back Alumni from not only Trinity but Aquinas, Mercy and Rosary when the Titans play Archdiocesan Athletic Association Small School rival John F. Kennedy at 6:15.
Trinity will also play North County rivals Hazelwood West (Sept. 10, 4 p.m. at West), Hazelwood Central (Oct. 12, 6:15 at Trinity) and McCluer North (Oct, 16, 6 p.m. at MN) Also, Hazelwood East is scheduled to compete in the Trinity Varsity Tournament (Oct 1, 2, 4) and the Titans will be competing in the CYC Varsity Tournament, Sept. 17-21.
Meanwhile in Class Three the Suburban North Conference will no longer be assured of having at least one team advance from districts to the sectional round. District Five will have Francis Howell North, a potential state contender, compete against Hazelwood Central, Hazelwood West, McCluer North and Pattonville while in District Two Hazelwood East, McCluer and Ritenour competes against Chaminade and St. Louis University High. Riverview Gardens does not field a team.
HAZELWOOD WEST The Wildcats open the Boys Soccer season Aug. 24, 4:15 at Wentzville-Timberland. The ‘Cats, Suburban North Conference champions at 5-0 and was 20-8 overall, will return to the Parkway Tournament, Aug. 27-Sept. 1 in an attempt to repeat after winning last year at Parkway West. Also, West will return to the Lafayette Tournament, Oct 1-6, after finishing second last year to Lafayette.
West qualified for Class Three Sectionals last year before losing to Francis Howell Central on penalty kicks.
