Services Held For Fischer’s of Florissant Founder Jim Fischer

Funeral services were held Monday for long-time Florissant businessman and civic leader James “Jim” Fischer, who owned the family operated Fischer’s Department store, now Fischer’s Pro-Line Sports in Florissant.

Fischer was a charter member and past president of the Rotary Club of Florissant and past district Governor of District 605. He started the “Kids Fishing” days, with assistance from the Sporting Dealers Guild. Fellow Rotarian Don Tanner said he enjoyed “all the years of Rotary fellowship in Jim’s service and dedication above self.”

Jim was an avid outdoorsman, mostly hunting and fishing. He went to numerous fishing trips to Canada with friends.

Mr. Fischer was one of the founding members of the Florissant Rotary Club and served as president in 1974-75. In 1977 he was appointed to lead a groups of Rotarians to India and he always said this was a highlight in his life.

Mayor Tom Schneider, another fellow Rotarian, said Mr. Fischer was always happy to see Florissant businesses succeeding. “If he was visiting a business or restaurant, it pleased him to see Florissant businesses prospering.”

Mr. Fischer also served on the board of directors for the North County YMCA (not Emerson YMCA) and helped raise thousand of dollars to build the new facility

The original Fischer’s was opened by Jim Fischer’s parents at 601 Jefferson. Jim and his brother Al began rystal Florissant Road in 1954. As the community expanded, so did the store, becoming a department store with clothing, small appliances, and sporting goods. The store later switched to selling only sporting goods, becoming Fischer’s Pro-Line Sports. In addition to selling sporting goods, the store also designs and sells team uniforms.

Fischer was the husband of the late Verena H. (nee Momper) Fischer, father and father-in-law of James (Kathy) Joyce, Donald (Becky) and Richard (Mary) Fischer, grandfather of six, and great-grandfather of three.

Fischer’s funeral was held at Hutchens Mortuary, with mass at St. Rose Phillipine Duchesne Church on Monday.

Burial was at Salem Lutheran cemetery in Black Jack.
