West’s Ben Solari Wins 2 State Swim Event Titles

After two straight years of competing in the Boys State Swimming Consolation finals, Ben Solari, a senior this year at Hazelwood West High School, qualified last weekend at the St. Peters’ Rec-Plex in two championship events, the 200-yard Individual Medley and the 100-yard Breaststroke. And Solari won in those two state championship events.

In the Individual Medley Solari qualified for the state championship last Friday with a preliminary round best time of 1:55.43, about 0.21 second better than Marshall junior Mason Weber. Last Saturday Solari won the event with a 1:54.41 effort, as he finished 0.15 second ahead of Weber.

In the breaststroke Solari was second last Friday in the preliminaries with a 58.45-second effort, about one-tenth of a second behind Columbia-Rock Bridge senior Wyatt Hodges. Last Saturday Solari came back to win the championship event with a 57.76-second effort as he finished 0.66 second ahead of Hodges.
Also qualified in the state championship finals was Hazelwood Central junior John Krause, who was second in the 50-yard Freestyle to Blue Springs South junior Derrion Thomas. Krause was third in the 100-yard Freestyle as he finished behind state champion Ethan Rose, a Park Hill South senior, and runner up Matt Maurer, a Springfield-Kickapoo junior.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL — Incarnate Word Academy finished fourth in Class Four State Nov. 2-3 at the University of Central Missouri (formerly Central Missouri State University) Multipurpose Building in Warrensburg. On Nov. 2 Incarnate Word (23-12-4 in matches and 53-36 in games) went 1-1 in semifinal round robin matches against Lafayette and eventual State Champion Lee’s Summit West while losing 2-0 to eventual runner up and Midwest Women’s Athletic Association rival Cor Jesu. On Nov. 3 IWA lost 2-0 (25-22, 26-24) to Lafayette in the third-place match.

CROSS COUNTRY — A pair of Lutheran North boys, Adam Prahlow and Steven Liggins, and another boys’ runner, Hazelwood East’s Charles Johnson, each finished in the top 20 in the Missouri State Championships, Nov. 3 in Jefferson City. In Class Two Boys, Prahlow finished fifth while Liggins finished 16th.In Class Four Boys, Johnson finished 13th.

BOYS SOCCER — Hazelwood Central was the only area high school to advance past the district tournament but the Hawks’ season ended Nov. 6 with a Class Three Sectional double-overtime loss to Mehlville, 1-0 at the Anheuser-Busch Center, Fenton. Hazelwood Central (17-11) won Class Three, District Three, played at the Florissant-Eagan Civic Center Park with wins over McCluer North, 1-0 in double overtime on Oct. 30, and 3-0 over Suburban North Conference champion Hazelwood West on Nov. 1.
