Incarnate Word Basketball

Seeking 11th State Title

By Jim Wieners

Incarnate Word Academy Basketball is holding a Missouri State High School Activities Association Record for most Girls titles in that sport, with 10.

However, Basketball does not own the IWA record for most state sports titles in the all-Girls high school. Volleyball holds the IWA mark for most state titles with 11. The Red Knights won the last nine since 2006, eight since 2010 and six in the last seven years.

IWA, 25-4 as of March 9, was four wins away from the school’s record-tying 11th state title prior to the March 10 Class Four, Sectional Four game against Warrenton at Troy-Buchanan. If IWA wins, the Red Knights play Saturday, March 14, 6 p.m. against Ladue-Horton Watkins or Vashon at Maryville University Maloney Arena at Simon Center in the State Quarterfinal.   Saturday’s winner plays in the Class Four State Tournament March 19-20 at Missouri State University’s JQH Arena in Springfield.

Incarnate won their 11th consecutive district title and their 31st district or regional title since 1974 when the Red Knights won Class Four, District at St. Charles High. IWA defeated St. Charles West 65-28 in the semifinal and Parkway North 66-37 in the final.

Incarnate Word and St. Charles West were tied 10-10 after one quarter. Since then the Red Knights outscored the Warriors 45-10 in the second and third quarters and the lead of 55-20 resulted in the rolling clock inn the

fourth quarter. Freshman Natalie Potts led IWA with 17 points while senior Katie Rolfes.

The win over Parkway North was the second for IWA in three meetings. The previous two were identical scores of 61-43 with the Red Knights winning Dec. 27, 2019, in the Visitation Academy Christmas Tournament semifinal while the Vikings won at Parkway North Jan. 7. Freshman Brooke Coffey scored 18 points while sophomore Saniah Tyler added 17 as IWA outscored Parkway North in all four quarters.

GIRLS SWIMMING AND DIVING — Incarnate Word Academy senior swimmer Ellie Wehrmann, who was the first individual at the all-Girls Catholic high school in Bel-Nor, finished her prep career Feb. 21, at the St. Peters’ Rec-Plex by winning the Class One State title in the 200-Yard Freestyle.

Wehrmann swam the championship final in the 200-Freestyle in 1:52.05. It was her second state title in that event in three years, which includes winning in 2018 (1:51.01). She will graduate from IWA with four state titles, all freestyle, including two at 100 Yards (51.71 seconds in 2018 and 51.93 in 2019)

After the 200-Freestyle Wehrmann took second in the 200-Yard Individual Medley (2:07:45) to Nerinx Hall sophomore Brooke Punnewaert (2:07.43). Wehrmann teamed up with junior Jordan Hodges, sophomore Abigail Cavaness and freshman Anna Marie Tolentino to finish second in the 200-Yard Freestyle
