Let’s Hope Blues Get Past 1stRound Just to Get Away From Those 9 p.m. Games

By Randy Gardner

It’s certainly great that the Blues made the playoffs and had a chance to play a team like San Jose on one hand because they were seeded so much lower than them in the standings. But on the other hand, the 9 and 9:30 p.m. starts are a killer. The games aren’t over till midnight or later.

If you are a true fan you stay up and watch but with work and kids, you are so tired you can basically only make it through the first period. The Blues as I write this on Tuesday are up 2-1 in games  after a heart stopper Monday night when they almost blew a 3 goals lead.

Of course I missed most of the game because I fell asleep but I saw the highlights the next day. I guess that is just as good as watching it. They will come back home and hopefully finish it all up here at the Scottrade Center in front of the home crowd.

That would be so cool to have success here in hockey that we have not seen since 2004.

It seems like the Blues were great in the ’70s, bad in the ’80s, good in the ’90s,  just okay in the 2000s, and really good here in the 2010 era. We will see though as the opponents get tougher and tougher the further the Blues go into the playoffs. Injuries and fatigue will play a major factor in their success.

Stan is Still the Man in St. Louis

How about opening day for the Cards, what a bummer. Besides taking a beating in the worst way, the weather was horrible. It was really cool to see all of the former players and current players come in in the traditional car ride around the stadium.

The thing that stood out the most to me was Stan the Man Musial, I know he is 91 now but it seems like this guy shouldn’t age at all. He is an icon.

Do you like the gold in the Cards uniform now? It really stands out. Remember what the Rams did after winning the Super Bowl, they changed to a gold color and they have never been the same again. Is the gold in the uniform to much or does it remind teams that they were champions last year. I think that the team that wins any championship in any sport should have the gold intertwined into their logo for the following year. When they lose, the gold color goes away.

I know a lot of you have children that read my column and I have talked about my oldest boy playing sports but my middle boy starts soccer this weekend. He is 3 and he is looking forward to it so much, everyday he says, today’s my game, right dad. I never knew how much I think he has looked up to his brother playing sports until this week. I remember the envy of my brother racing cars and when the spotlight was put on me for soccer— it was great. I see that look in my little boy’s eyes now, like dad it is my time for you to watch me. I am looking so forward to his game and to see him play. Like any kid, he just wants his time to be recognized and applauded.
