Hazelwood West Boys Swimming will compete in seven Class Two State events beginning with the preliminaries Friday, Nov. 3, 5 p.m. at the St. Peters’ Rec-Plex.
This will come after the conclusion of the Class One Championships so traffic could be slow on Mexico Road and or parking on the Rec Plex and St. Peters City Hall lot may be full and tough to get in, or get out.
Two West seniors, Spencer Campbell and Rami Hanin, will compete in two individual events. Campbell qualified in the 50-yard Freestyle (22.15 seconds, qualified Aug. 26) and 100-yard Freestyle (48.74 seconds, Aug. 26). Hanin qualified in the 200-yard Freestyle (1:49.27, Oct. 26) and 10-yard Backstroke (55.82 seconds, Oct. 26).
Campbell and Hanin can also compete in two of the three relay events West has entered. They include the 200-yard Freestyle Relay (1:33.83, Oct. 26), 400-yard Freestyle Relay (3:34.56, Oct. 25) and 200-yard Medley Relay (1:52.64, Sept. 7). Wes has 11 swimmers on the Oct. 29 roster but names were unavailable.
Also entering in Class Two state are two Hazelwood Central Relay teams, 200-yard Freestyle (1:42.46, Oct. 26) and 200-yard Medley (1:58.37, Oct. 25), while McCluer North is in the 200 Medley Relay (1:57.9, Oct. 26).
CLASS ONE — Two McCluer swimmers, senior Drew Tallent and sophomore Devon Tallent, and Hazelwood East senior Jaylan Butler will compete in the Thursday, Nov. 2 prelims, beginning at noon.
Drew Tallent has qualified in the 100-yard Butterfly (53.93 seconds, Aug. 30) and 100 Backstroke (55.47 seconds, Aug. 30). Devon Tallent qualified in the 500-yard Freestyle (5:26.36, Oct. 26). Butler has qualified in the 50 Freestyle (22.6 seconds, Sept. 6) and 100 Butterfly (53.6 seconds Aug. 31)
Only the top 32 in each swim, diving and relay event, plus ties, are in state. The top 16 participants in each event advance to the finals. The top eight will compete for state championships. Swim and Relay Finals are Friday, 10 a.m. for Class One and Saturday, Nov. 4, 3 p.m. for Class Two.
CROSS COUNTRY — Incarnate Word Academy will enter their team in the Class Three Girls’ State Championship Saturday, 11:55 a.m. at Oak Hills Golf Course, Jefferson City. The Red Knights qualified thanks to winning District 4 Oct. 28 at Warrenton, scoring 40 points, four better than Runner up St. Charles did.
Senior Broke Fredrickson led the way for IWA with a second-place finish in 20:38.44; about 1:22.64 behind state champion Mercedes Schroer, O’Fallon Christian. Also finishing in the top 10 is Freshman Sydney Fredrickson (sixth in 22:00.91).
HAZELWOOD WEST sends two boys and a girl from Class Four, Sectional Two to State Saturday in Jefferson. Qualifying in the 12:30 p.m. Boys race are junior Yuto Wada (16th in Sectional Two-17:02 17) and senior Darwin Carpenter (18th-17:04.20). Competing in the 11:20 a.m. girls’ race is senior Mallory Hutchcraft (24th-20:53.20).
