7 From St. Louis Elite Tramp andTumble Earn National Medals

Thirteen area athletes from St. Louis Elite Tramp and Tumble in Hazelwood competed at the 2007 USA Gymnastics Junior Olympics Tramopoline & Tumbling Nationals, with seven of these athletes winning a combined 7 medals – 2 Gold, 3 Silver, and 2 Bronze. Nearly all the athletes placing in the Top Ten in one or more event.

“It was an exceptional competition for the athletes,” said Eric Miller, head coach of St. Louis Elite Trampoline & Tumbling. “They trained very hard all year long and it was incredible to see all that hard work and determination paying off!”

Two St. Louis Elite athletes won Gold to become National Champions in their respective events. Ian Miller (14), of Ballwin, won Gold on the trampoline in a field that included 16 other boys at Level 8 (13-14 year old). Natalie Altis (15), of Wildwood, won Gold in Power Tumbling in a field of 15 girls, Level 6 (15 years and over).

Other St. Louis Elite medalists were: Clayton Janvrin (9), of Florissant, won Silver on the double-mini trampoline and Bronze on the trampoline; Kalli McCann (16), of Bridgeton, won Silver in tumbling; Henry Baer (10), of Town & Country, won Silver in tumbling; and Amanda Wentz (16), of Moscow Mills, won Bronze in synchronized trampoline.

The National Championships is the last event of the Junior Olympic competition season. The St. Louis Elite team will spend the rest of this year preparing for next season, which begins in January 2008.

Trampoline was first recognized as a sport in its own right in the United States in 1967 and made its Debut as an Olympic sport at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. Double-mini trampoline competition was added in 1978. Power tumbling, first performed on simple mats, has had US National Championships dating back to 1886.
