Rain Didn’t Dampen Events At Annual Mingle at the Mills

Despite cooler weather and rain, this year’s Mingle at the Mills was definitely a crowd pleaser with smiles, cheers, and checkered waving flags in every direction

Out of the 7,082 raffle tickets sold at the 8th annual Mingle at the Mills Mayor’s Challenge Cup, held  Friday Sept. 16 at The Saint Louis Mills NASCAR Speedtrack, Mayor Matt Robinson of Hazelwood sold a staggering 960 tickets which gave him pole position in the race.

“The money earned from the raffle ticket sales go towards high school scholarships,” said event board member Fletcher Wells. “How much we are able to give depends on how many people buy the tickets. Hopefully the rain won’t keep people away.”

Indeed the rain did not.

People gathered to watch and participate in ten charity go-kart races. “We have a lot of races, but the mayor’s race is the hallmark event,” explained Wells. This is a 20-lap, go-kart race that pited mayors representing up to 17 different North St. Louis County communities against each other.

Such a statement was proven true as supporters lined up along the race track and cheered on their city mayor. Mayer Lee Taylor of St. John was the winner of this year’s race.

The participating municipalities include Bellfontaine Neighbors, Berkeley, Bridgeton, Charlack, Cool Valley, Dellwood, Edmundson, Ferguson, Florissant, Hazelwood, Overland, Pasadena Hills, St. Ann, St. John, Village of Riverview, Vinita Park, and Woodson Terrace.

A portion of the race entry fees went to the chamber’s scholarship fund and benefit some local charities.

The races were not the only attraction, however.

Local company booths were giving away goodies such as t-shirts, Frisbees, and water bottles.  Many people strolled over to the Classic Car

Cruise or ate all the chicken wings their hearts desired in the King of Wings contest, where seven local restaurants competed for the best chicken wings around. People could ditch the rain and enjoy a burger and soda while enjoying live music under umbrella tables near the race track.
