St. Louis C.C. Consolidates Athletics; Now One Team Called the ‘Archers’

Say good bye to the Florissant Valley Fury (formerly Norsemen/Norsewomen). Say good bye to the Forest Park Highlanders. Say good bye to the Meramec Magic (formerly Warriors).

Say hello to the St. Louis Community College “Archers.”

Beginning in August St. Louis Community College will open the athletic season with Men’s Soccer and Women’s Volleyball playing their home matches on the Florissant Valley campus while the Women’s Soccer team will call the Meramec campus home. In November Men’s and Women’s Basketball will play their home games at the Forest Park campus and next spring Baseball and Softball will play home games at the Meramec campus. The school     colors for the Archers are navy and silver.

Students at the Florissant Valley, Forest Park and Meramec campuses, as well as the Wildwood campus, can compete in any sport St. Louis Community College offers. The Wildwood campus does not offer athletics.

Men’s Soccer opens with an exhibition game Aug. 20 at Harris-Stowe State followed by a home exhibition game Aug. 23 against Fontbonne. The season opens Aug.27 at Danville area followed by their home opener Aug. 30 against Jefferson College. Mike Mayberry, who coached at Florissant Valley the last two years, will coach the Archers this year and will be assisted by Jim Langley.

Women’s Volleyball opens with the College of DuPage Tournament, Aug. 26-27 in Glen Ellyn, Ill. After two more road tournaments and two road matches the home opener at Florissant Valley is Sept. 14 against East Central College.

Johnna Kinney, head coach at Florissant Valley since 2000 and acting athletic director at Florissant Valley, will coach the Archers and be the St. Louis Community College Athletic Director. Kinney will be assisted in Women’s Volleyball by Debbi Bronder and in the Athletic Department by Sharon Marquardt, who was Forest Park athletics coordinator.

Women’s Soccer, coached by former Forest Park head coach Juergen Huettner, will play two road exhibitions, Aug. 22 against Fontbonne and Aug. 24 against Webster before their Meramec home opener Aug. 26 against Allen County.

In Soccer the only home exceptions include a men’s game Sept. 10 at Meramec against Northeastern Oklahoma A & M while the women will play home games at Florissant Valley Sept. 13 against Lewis & Clark Community College and Oct. 16 against Dakota Tech

MIKE JONES NEW LINCOLN UNIV. HEAD FOOTBALL COACH, TONY VAN ZANT TO ASSIST — Mike Jones, who was a head coach at Hazelwood East in 2008-2009 and a linebackers coach in 2010 at Southern University in Louisiana (Baton Rouge) will now take his leadership to Jefferson City, Mo., to be the head coach of Lincoln University.  Jones, who assisted the now Hazelwood East athletic director Corey Johnson, led East to a Class Five State title in 2008 and was a player for the St. Louis Rams who made the game-saving tackle to secure a Super Bowl XXXIV title

One of his assistants will be Tony Van Zant, who played four years at Hazelwood Central including an undefeated Class 5A State championship his senior season in 1985. Van Zant spent 15 years as a coach in Michigan, 2010 as an offensive coordinator/running backs coach at Arthur Hill High, 14 years prior to that as head coach at Buena Vista High. His prep playing career netted 6,138 yards and 91 touchdowns.
