Hazelwood Central Boys Track & Field Repeats As Class 4 State Champions

Hazelwood Central Boys Track and Field, somehow, managed to win their second straight Missouri State High School Activities Association Class Four title May 27-28 at Lincoln University’s Dwight T. Reed Stadium in Jefferson City, their third since 1987 and Central‘s  16th in all sports since 1977.


With only 41 points, fewer than 49 from last year, Central edged out Liberty and Rockwood Summit (tied for second with 34) as well as Wentzville-Holt (31) and Ladue-Horton Watkins. The Hawks won the title by winning the last event, the 4×400-Meter Relay in 3:17.61, Holt was second in 3:18.21, Liberty was seventh and Ladue, thanks to a bad handoff, finished eighth.

The Hawks, who also managed a fourth-place finish in the 4×800-Meter Relay won despite the fact that the 4×100 Relay was ninth in the May 27 preliminaries and the 4×200 Relay was disqualified May 14 in District Three at McCluer for an out of exchange lane handoff.

Michael Hester, who anchored the 4×400 Relay, also won the 400-Meter Dash in 47.7 seconds and won the 200-Meter Dash in 21.96 seconds. On the Girls side A. Henderson took two thirds, in the 100-Meter Dash and at 200 Meters while Kim Moye was second in the Triple Jump.

HAZELWOOD EAST took fourth place in GIRLS Class Four with 41 points but was one point behind third-place

NERINX HALL. Tianna Valentine won the 100-Meter Dash in 11.69 seconds and helped the East 4×200 Relay to a state title (1:39.6) but Valentine took second at 200 Meters while the 4×100 Relay was also second. Leading Nerinx Hall were Colleen Quigley, who won at 1,600 Meters (4:52.17) and 3,200 Meters (10:27.62), and Peyton Chaney, who won at 200 Meters (24.54 seconds) and was second at 100 Meters.

McCLUER NORTH was led on the Boys side by Deondre Cannaday, who won the Shot Put with a 57’11.5” heave on his second attempt while finishing eighth in the Discus. On the Girls side the 4×400 Relay finished second while Kendra While was second at 400 Meters and fifth at 200 Meters. McCLUER had two girls, Catrina Harris and Sherise Williams, finish in a tie for third in the High Jump (each at the 5’3” mark).

ST. LOUIS UNIVERSITY HIGH was led by Tim Rackers who took third at 3,200 Meters and fourth at 1,600 Meters while RIVERVIEW GARDENS Long Jumper Cory Winfield took second place (22‘6“).

IN CLASS THREE McCLUER SOUTH-BERKELEY BOYS finished second with 66 points, nine behind Grandview. McCluer South-Berkeley won the 4×200 Relay (1:27.08), 4×100 Relay (42.45 seconds) and the 4×400 Relay (3:22.15) while Lonell Watkins won at 100 Meters (10.95 seconds) and 200 Meters (22.08 seconds). On the girls side the McCluer South-Berkeley 4×400 Relay finished second.
