NASCAR Will Miss Bill France, Where Will Earnhardt End Up?

BY RANDY GARDNER

If you are not a NASCAR fan, this column will not be for you but if you are, let’s talk.

First about the passing of Bill France, Jr., this guy was the backbone of Nascar and helped propel it to where it is today. All the way from its meek beginnings back in Daytona Beach, this man brought racing across the country. He will be missed; you can clearly see that from the interviews especially with the older drivers like Richard Petty.

Now onto the subject of Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Where will he end up over the next 10 days? I said in the beginning that this might just be a big promotional stunt to take the focus off of his bad couple of years behind the wheel and that he pull things back together and then say that he had made up with DEI and everything would be fine. I know don’t think that this is the case at all.

Will he be a fit for Joe Gibbs racing, I don’t really know. I would probably say no. I think that the way Joe Gibbs runs a race team and Dale, Jr’s life and attitude, these two would really clash heads. Dale, Jr, can pretty much call the shots wherever he goes, but I don’t think that Joe Gibbs could give up that much control. It was really nice though to see Dales Jr’s teammate Martin Truex, Jr. win at Dover this past weekend or should I say on Monday due to the Sunday rainout.

I really like the Saturday night races for two reasons. One, it gives me something to watch on Saturday night and two if the race gets rained out; they have Sunday as a backup date.

———-St. Louis Fans Flock to MU
It was great to see Missouri host a regional, and then bad to see them fall 16-6 to Louisville. It was really amazing how many people from the St. Louis area went to Columbia to see the games. I didn’t realize it until I talked to some baseball fans and they all said they were going to Columbia. Louisville hit a grand slam in the first inning and could never really rebound from it. Congratulations to Mizzou on a great season.

———-Why UMSL Tritons?
Talking about University of Missouri teams, how about the change of names for the UMSL teams from the Rivermen to the Tritons. What is that all about? Everyone that I have asked has no idea what a Triton is and what the logo is all about.

Maybe it will catch on with me later but right now all I can say is what the hay. They said that they did a poll and the Triton name won but I have yet to hear one person say they voted for it. Good luck though to all of the sports programs over there at UMSL.
