Ferguson-Florissant School Board Recognizes Excellence in Students, Staff

The Ferguson-Florissant School District Board of Education will honor the following students and staff at its board meeting on Wednesday, May 11, at 7 p.m.

James Hauf, a social studies teacher at Berkeley Middle School, is one of 110 United States teachers selected by the U.S. Department of State and International Research and Exchanges Board to participate in a two-way exchange program that provides enrichment opportunities to secondary teachers from around the world. Hauf begins his two-week teaching stint in Ghana on June 4.

Cathy Holway, a fourth-grade teacher at Combs Elementary School, was one of 100 teachers nationwide selected to participate in the all-expenses paid 2011 Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy. The prestigious academy will be held July 17-22 at the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Allison Wallace, a senior at McCluer High School, earned the Gates Millennium scholarship. Allison is a 2010 YWCA Future Leader and the fifth student from McCluer to win the all-expense paid renewable scholarship, established to provide an opportunity for outstanding minority students. She plans to attend the University of Southern California.

Victor Sy, an eighth-grader at Ferguson Middle School, earned a perfect score as a participant in the Continental Mathematics League, a national math competition. Victor is a National student winner in the league’s Euclidean Division, a title that only five other students in the country hold.

The board recognized three seniors who are among the top five percent of Missouri ACT test takers. Students must attain a score of 31 or higher on the ACT in order to be awarded this scholarship to an approved Missouri postsecondary school. McCluer High School’s Scott Jost scored 33, and Molly O’Keefe scored 32. McCluer North High School’s Charles Pixley scored 32. The trio will each receive a $1,500 scholarship for their accomplishments. Scott plans to study engineering, Molly is still considering what she will major in and Charles also plans to go into engineering.

Four sophomores were selected to participate in the 2011 Missouri Scholars Academy (MSA). The three-week academic program for 330 gifted students who are ready to begin their junior year in high school is directed by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. The MSA is a highly-competitive enrichment program held on the campus of the University of Missouri from June 12 through July 2. Two students from McCluer, Jennifer Boston and Kenya Turner, and two students from McCluer North, Darby Dachroeden and Jacqueline Schultz, will attend the program.

Nicole Whitesell, principal of McCluer High School, was named the 2011-12 St. Louis Area High School Principal of the Year by the St. Louis Association of Secondary School Principals.

Four McCluer seniors created the award-winning video “Cheating.” Chase Dzierwa and Kyle Thies wrote and directed, while Daniel Huber and Michael Roberson served as crew members. The collaboration garnered two awards, Best Action, high school category, and Best High School Video, at the PBIS Film Festival this spring.
