By Jim Wieners
Incarnate Word Academy, an all-Girls high school in Bel-Nor, has won 11 volleyball titles, a Missouri State High School Activities Association record, including five straight during the early to mid 1980s and won back to back in 2003-2004.
IWA has won nine girls soccer titles and is aiming for number 10 this spring. The Red Knights have won back to back titles three times. IWA was denied back to back in 2005 by Kansas City-St. Teresa’s after winning in 2004, would have four-peated.
Girls Basketball has been playing “third fiddle” at IWA and now the Red Knights can add back to back hoop titles, nearly two weeks ago. IWA only has four titles in that sport but was able to repeat for the first time in that sport.
Overall the three sports netted the school 24 MSHSAA titles in nearly 35 years.
IWA took an early-to-mid December trip to Hawaii and went 2-1 and before the start of 2011 won tournaments at Farmington and the Academy of the Visitation. Then the Red Knights did something rare, two straight losses, as they lost to Webb City at CBC and Blue Springs at home. That became a concern when IWA went to North Technical for the Martin Luther King Day Showcase, a site where the Red Knights lost last year to Chicago Whitney Young, but they were relieved in a 48-36 win over Memphis (Tenn.) Ridgeway
IWA split this year with St. Joe winning 64-63 in Visitation Christmas Tournament Championship game but St. Joe won a rematch at home Jan. 29 by a 61-53 score. St. Joe’s win gave the Angels the MWAA white Division title.
The Red Knights won their last 13 in route to a repeat title and during the season defeated Fort Zumwalt West three times including a 48-45 quarterfinal win on a three-point buzzer beater. At Mizzou Arena, Columbia, IWA got even with Webb City, 2010 Class Four champs, with a 60-56 semifinal win and paid back Blue Springs with a 53-49 title-game win as Blue Springs took second place for the third year in a row.
