Free Screenings For Children Under 5 in F-F School District

Free developmental screenings, health, hearing and vision functional screenings for children 6 months to 5 years are offered by the Ferguson-Florissant School District’s Parents as Teachers program.  A certified screener will do screenings in your home or a nearby district building.

Developmental screenings by a trained professional can provide a snapshot of your child’s strengths, identify developmental delays or behavioral concerns, and catch possible hearing, vision and dental concerns.

Parents as Teachers is a free parent education and family support program for all families throughout pregnancy until their child enters kindergarten.  Parents are supported by certified parent educators trained to translate scientific information on early brain development into specific when, what, how, and why advice for parents.

5 Hazelwood Central Named to All-Suburban Musical Groups

Five students from Hazelwood Central High School were selected to the 2010-2011 St. Louis All-Suburban band and orchestra.

Students selected to the All-Suburban Band include Brian Jacobs, tuba; Jasmine Alade-Fa, baritone saxophone; and Kelle Sutton, clarinet.

Students selected to the All-Suburban Orchestra are Jocelynn Wolfe, violin, and Margaret Franklin, cello.

Kimberly Jackson, orchestra director at Hazelwood Central, explained the significance of being selected to the performance groups.

“Being a member of the All-Suburban band or orchestra means you are one of the top players on your instrument in the St. Louis area, and it is an honor to be a part of the ensembles,” Jackson said. “All of the students at Hazelwood Central are happy to have this opportunity and to be a part of it.”

She also explained the audition process for both groups.

“The band students have to prepare all major and minor scales and then are told which scale to play in the audition, along with a few music excerpts that they are given ahead of time,” said Jackson.

The orchestra performance is set for Jan.  8 at Pattonville High School. The band performance will take place on Jan. 9 at Ladue High School.
