East, Central, McCluer North Football Advance To Sectionals

Hazelwood East, Hazelwood Central and McCluer North Football teams continue their 2010 seasons as they are advancing to the Missouri State High School Activities Association Sectionals.

Hazelwood East (5-5) is on a 3-game winning streak including three straight in winning Class Five, District Three (3-0). Suburban North Conference champion Hazelwood Central (10-0) has won 16 straight going to last year and the defending Class Six State Champions begin their road to a three-peat by sweeping District Four (3-0). McCluer North (7-2) rebounded from a 28-21 loss to Hazelwood Central to take second in District Six (2-1).

Hazelwood East earned a bye in the Class Five Regionals and will play the Sectional round Nov. 8, at Ritenour High‘s Moore Field, against Chaminade (8-2) after the Red Devils won the  Nov. 3 Regional by forfeit over District Three Runner Up Riverview Gardens (2-9) due to a fight after losing 47-42 to McCluer, Oct 30. East or Chaminade will play Nov. 13, 1:30, against the Webster Groves-Seckman winner or Rockwood-Summit and Webster Groves is the defending Class Five State Champion.

Hazelwood East completed a 3-game sweep of Class Five, District Three with a high-scoring 60-28 romp Oct. 30 at Normandy (3-7), who was eliminated by points (-13) on a three-way district tie (1-2) with Riverview (-5) and McCluer (-21) before Riverview’s forfeit.

In the last four games, all wins, East has scored 213 points. Against Normandy Trey Perry ran for four touchdowns while Carlton Bailey ran for two touchdowns and Randy Patterson ran for another.

“We’ve improved every day,” said East head coach Brian Simmons on the Spartans’ progress.    “Our guys are playing just fine.” With scoring production from the running game up and taking the pressure off from the passing combination of Trey Hill to Jayln Fulton (two touchdowns against Normandy) “we don’t want to be a one-dimension team,” Simmons said.

In Class Six Sectionals    McCluer North visits Metro Catholic Conference Champion CBC (9-1) Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. while Hazelwood Central hosts Rockwood-Marquette (8-2) Nov. 6 at 1:30. The winners will play each other in the Quarterfinal Round Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. or Nov. 13 at 1:30 at site to be announced.

McCluer North secured a sectional berth Oct. 30 with a high-scoring 49-31 home romp of Ritenour. Galen Brown took charge for the Stars completing 13 of 17 passes for 226 yards and 5 touchdowns, two to Nevar Griffin who caught six passes for 121 yards, and Brown ran for 64 yards and a touchdown.

Hazelwood Central completed a 3-game District Six sweep, a seven-game sweep of the Suburban North Conference and wrapped up Hazelwood School District bragging rights Oct. 30 with a 41-0 shutout at Hazelwood West. It was their second 41-0 win for the Hawks who also did the same Oct. 2 at Riverview. Central scored all 41 points in the first half over West and eight Hawk players contributed to scoring six touchdowns and five extra points.

CLASS THREE — On Nov. 3 Lutheran North (5-5) had a rematch with ABC League Champion John Burroughs (10-0) while Cardinal Ritter played Priory in a battle of 8-2 teams. The two winners play 7 p.m. Nov. 8 at a site to be announced.  Ritter, Oct. 29 eliminated Trinity Catholic, 26-0 as John Edwards ran for 252 yards and four touchdowns and the Lions won the District Four title when Lutheran North won Oct. 30 over McCluer South-Berkeley, 35-20, as Ryan Moore ran for two Crusader touchdowns.
