For the second straight year Hazelwood Central Football takes a 7-0 record to 5-1 McCluer North for a 1 p.m. Suburban North Conference game Oct. 16 as Class Six, District Four play begins.

Both teams are 4-0 in Suburban North games. McCluer North has won five in a row following a 41-10 opening week loss at Jefferson City. The Stars are coming off a 56-24 home rout of Riverview Gardens Oct. 9 as Galen Brown ran for three touchdowns and passed for two more to Nevar Griffin. “We are progressing,” said North Star head coach Jim Schottmueller but still “we need to get better in all phase of the game. We have to bring our ‘A‘ game and  hope they (Hazelwood Central) bring their ‘B’ game.”

Hazelwood Central, during their run of winning two straight Class Six State titles, has won 30 out of their last 32 games with McCluer North being the only team the Hawks have lost. And the Stars won twice in route to taking the District Six title on head-to-head tiebreaker. But Central, each time, rebounded to win state each time. “We’ve done it to ourselves,” said Hawk head coach  Rich Nixon on the losses to the Stars but his time “we determine the outcome.”

After winning five games by seven points or less the Hawks have rolled over their last two opponents including a 48-12 home pasting of McCluer High, Oct 9. Jamal Flowers passed for three touchdowns, two to D.J. Cameron, and Flowers ran for another. “This is the best football team we have yet.” said Nixon. “Both coaches will have their teams ready,” said Schottmueller, and “they will have to play the game.”

IN THE OTHER CLASS SIX, DISTRICT FOUR GAME Ritenour (1-3 SNC, 4-3) hosts Hazelwood West (1-3 SNC, 1-6) Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. On Oct. 9 Ritenour was routed at home 48-6 by Hazelwood East and Hazelwood West  was shut out 33-0 at home by Pattonville.

CLASS THREE, DISTRICT FOUR — Cardinal Ritter (6-1) McCluer South-Berkeley (4-3), Trinity Catholic (5-2) at Lutheran North (3-4) — both Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. “It’s going to be a battle,” said Trinity head coach Leon Hite, “it’s going to be a shootout.” Cardinal Ritter has won six in a row after opening the season with a 13-6 loss at St. Dominic while MS-Berkeley lost Oct. 9 at Normandy. Trinity is coming off their fifth straight win, 48-29 Oct. 8 at St. Mary’s as Toma Peebles and Desoto Dickson each ran for two touchdowns while Lutheran North fell 21-19 at home Oct. 9 to Mary Institute-Country Day School.

CLASS FIVE, DISTRICT THREE — Hazelwood East (2-3 SNC, 2-5) at McCluer (1-4 SNC, 1-6), Normandy (2-5) at Riverview Gardens (1-4 SNC, 1-6) — both Oct. 16 1 p.m. — McCluer and Riverview were routed on the road while Normandy defeated MS-Berkeley 32-6 on Oct. 9. That same day Hazelwood East won 48-6 at Ritenour as Trey Hill had four of his five completed passes resulted in touchdowns, three of them to Jaylen Fulton while Trey Perry ran for two touchdowns and a two-point conversion.
