Council Considers Changing Zoning Code for Offices in Residential Areas

By Carol Arnett

The Florissant City Council held a public hearing last week in which they discussed the possibility of amending the zoning code to allow for mixed office-residences and professional offices in residential zoning districts.

“I want to observe that other communities have this and we have it in Old Town,” said Councilman Tom Schneider. “Several businesses are grandfathered in.”

Councilman John Grib said he disagreed with Schneider. “This erodes residential neighborhoods,” he said. “To change the zoning laws to accommodate one house – I don’t see it.”

“I don’t see this as changing the zoning code,” said Councilman Mark Schmidt. “We’re amending the zoning code.” Schmidt said the city did not have a way to deal with these businesses now. “It’s don’t ask, don’t tell,” he said.

The city’s Planning and Zoning Commission recommended denial of the change. The council held a first reading on the bill amending the zoning code. They will have a second read and vote on approval at the next council meeting.

A second public hearing was held to discuss allowing an outdoor covered patio area for Mattingly’s Inn on 8108 North Lindbergh. The council voted to approve the change.

The third public hearing at the meeting was a request to approve the final subdivision of the park Side Estate Subdivision Plat for the property located at 2316, 2355, and 2375 Charbonier Road. This is across from Koch Park, behind the Shop N Save. The council held a first reading on the bill approving this subdivision. They will hold the second reading and vote on approval at the next meeting.

In other matters, the council passed ordinances  for a new restaurant. Weaver’s Dominique Deli will open in the property located at 12761 New Halls Ferry Road.

The council also passed an ordinance appropriating $50,000 for the repair of masonry on the James J. Eagan Center.

The council reminded residents that several board and commissions need new members. They urged interested citizens to contact the mayor or their council member for more information.
