Going 2-2 In District 10 Tourney Ends Season For Florissant Legion Post 444

Two weeks ago the Florissant American Legion Post 444 Senior Baseball team saw their 2010 season come to an end after going 2-2 in the District 10 Senior Legion Tournament.

Post 444 Senior team finishes with a 13-4 overall record, 5-1 in District 10 regular season  play and finished  in first place in the North Division. Post 444 was also 4-0 in the Lebanon, Mo., (not Lebanon, Ill.) Tournament, June 25-26.

Florissant opened the District 10 Tournament with a 19-15 win at ABC Park, St. Ann, over Oakville on July 11 then went 1-2 in three days at Ellisville Athletic Association July 13-15. Post 444 lost to Manchester, 10-4 eliminated Maryland Heights, 7-3 on July 14, and ended their season July 15 with a 10-3 loss to Ballwin. Eureka won the District 10 title on July 16.

Post 444 and Oakville combined for 34 runs on 31 hits (Post 444 out hit Oakville 20-11) but it was a Greg Elliott grand slam with two out in the bottom of the ninth was the game-winner. Elliott, who drove in six runs, also had a triple, three singles, stole four bases and scored twice.

Besides the ninth inning Post 444 would also scored four runs in the second and fifth innings and three in the fourth and eighth. Oakville scored three times in the first, third and eighth but a six-run ninth tied the score at 15 leading to the walk off granny by Elliott.

Travis McBride scored four runs and drove in two thanks to four singles and a walk while Devon Haynes drove in three runs on two singles. Ryan Sweet, who had three singles and a walk, C.J. Spink, who had three walks and a single,  and Codi Farrel, who had a two run single as well as a walk and three stolen bases, each scored three runs. Nick Wildman, scored twice, had two singles and drove in a run.

Ricky Cody, the third of three pitchers Post 444 used, was credited with the win despite giving up six runs in the ninth inning, thanks to the Elliott grand slam.

Against Manchester Post 208 Florissant scored a pair of runs in the third inning and had a 2-0 lead through five innings but Post 208 scored 10 unanswered runs in the last four innings including five in the seventh. Post 444 only managed to score two in the bottom of the ninth.

Haynes homered and doubled while driving in two, McBride singles twice and scored twice as well as walking once and Wildman walked once and had a single while driving in two. Spink was the losing pitcher despite striking out four.

In a losers bracket elimination game against Maryland Heights Post 213 Florissant overcame a 2-1 deficit after five innings with a four-run sixth and after Post 213 scored a run in the seventh Post 444 got a pair of insurance runs in the eighth. Post 444 only had eight hits to 10 for Post 213, who also had seven errors leading to five unearned runs.

Travis Seitrich pitched a complete-game win which included striking out 11. Haynes and McBride each scored twice. Haynes had two singles, a walk and an RBI while McBride had a single, double and stole two bases.

Ballwin Post 611 and Florissant each scored a run in the first. Post 611 scored a pair of fourth-inning runs then sealed the end of the season for Post 444 with three runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh. Post 444 scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth after Post 611 scored a run in the top of the eighth.

Sweet had two singles and two RBIs, McBride scored a run and had an RBI single, Spink had two singles and walked three times while scoring a run, Wildman had two singles and Pat McDonald walked once and scored a run. Zach Zwenger pitched six innings in the loss.

EUREKA TRIFECTA — Eureka Post 177 won three District 10 Tournaments in July. Post 177 won their third straight Senior Legion District 10 title while wining District 10 Junior and Freshman titles.
