Hazelwood Central High School Boys Track and Field has enjoyed a championship season with wins in the Suburban North Conference Relays, the Suburban North Conference Tournament, Class Four, District Three and Class Four, Sectional Two.
Last weekend, May 28-29, at Dwight T. Reed Stadium, Lincoln University, Jefferson City, Hazelwood Central won the Class Four State Championships. The Hawks rallied from behind late in the meet and secured the title before the 4×400 Meter Relay, their second in school history (winning Class 4A in 1987) and it was Central’s 15th in all sports since 1975 (the Hawks have 18 titles including three as Hazelwood High in the pre-Central era). The Hawks scored 49 points and finished 12 ahead of Liberty and Lee’s Summit West, whom finished in a second-place tie with 37.
The Hawks medalled in all four relays, winning the 4×200, was fourth in the 4×400 and 4×800 and was sixth in the 4×100. Senior Spencer Davis, who helped the Hawks win Class Six Football in 2008 and 2009 and was on the 4×100 and 4×200 Relay teams, took second in the 200-Meter Dash and was third in the 100-Meter Dash. Junior Michael Hester, who was on the winning 4×200 Relay team, was seventh at 200 and 400 Meters while sophomore Marc Franks, who competed on the 4×400 and 4×800 Relays, was fourth at 400 Meters.
On the Girls side Central only medalled in two events. The Hawks were fifth in the 4×200 Relay and Senior Alexis Fennoy was seventh in the Long Jump.
In Class Three the McCluer South-Berkeley Ladies were tied for second in District Three with University City and was third in Sectional Two. But last weekend at state in Jefferson City the Bulldog Ladies won their fourth state title in a row on the last event of the day, winning the 4×400 Relay to overtake eventual second-place finisher Pembroke Hill (Kansas City), 62-58. It was the 10 Girls Track Title for the Bulldogs including six as Berkeley High.
MS-Berkeley Ladies also won the 4×200 Relay, was second in the 4×100 Relay and was fifth in the 4×800 Relay. Senior Kianna Ruff won the 400-Meter Dash and 800-Meter Run while senior Bianca Stokes was fifth at 200 Meters.
On the Boys side MS-Berkeley was runner up to University City in District Three, Sectional Two and State giving the Lions the Missouri State High School Activities Association record 18th State Outdoor title. The Lions have 37 track titles combined including 19 in Indoor Track, which disbanded in 1972.
MS-Berkeley Men won the 4×200 and 4×400 Relays and was third in the 4×800 Relay. Senior Ryan Dickson was third in the 100 Dash and fourth at 200 Meters, senior Ricky Greer was third in the 300 Hurdles and junior Jordan Wood was sixth at 400 Meters
HAZELWOOD EAST has a chance in Class Four Girls Track & Field and ended up in fourth place with 34 points, 33 behind state champion Lee’s Summit West. Sophomore Tianna Valentine won the 100-Meter Dash and was seventh at 200 Meters while senior Courtney Mitchell was third in the 300 Hurdles. Valentine and Mitchell helped the 4×100 Relay team to a state championship and a third-place finish in the 4×200 Relay.
On the Boys side senior Don Schumpert took second at 400 Meters while in the 300 Hurdles senior Walter Powell was third and senior Hassan Hamilton was fifth
CLASS FOUR — HAZELWOOD WEST – Shanelle Williams was sixth in the Girls 100 Hurdles and seventh in the Girls 300 Hurdles. McCLUER NORTH junior Kendra White was third in the girls 200 and 400 meters and helped the girls 4×400 Relay team take fourth place. McCLUER was sixth in the Girls 4×400 Relay while RIVERVIEW GARDENS took second in the Boys 4×200 Relay.
CLASS THREE — NORTH COUNTY TECHNICAL — Senior Marquis White took second in the Boys 100 Dash and eighth in the Boys 400 Dash. On the girls side senior Clarissa Thomas took fifth at 400 Meters and eighth in the 100 and 200 dashes while senior Sandra Ewing was sixth at 800 Meters.
TRINITY CATHOLIC senior Marquis Hill took fifth in the 100 Dash and seventh at 200 Meters while anchoring the 4×100 Relay team to a third place finish.
