Thirty-two McCurdy Elementary School students receive awards in 2010 Missouri Council of Teachers of Mathematics math, art contest.
Thirty-two McCurdy Elementary School students in the Hazelwood School District took home awards from the 2010 Missouri Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM) math and art contest, seven more than last year. Of the 32, seven earned blue ribbons.
The contest illustrates the connection between art and math, and geometry in particular, said art teacher Linda Crull.
This is the third year in a row that third grader Nick Mitalovich has won this contest. He received a blue ribbon for his computer-generated art. He said it doesn’t matter to him whether he uses a machine or he draws by hand.
“I liked the pattern, it looked like triangles,” he said of his blue and white design.
Fifth grader Mia Garland won first place for her geometric shapes that she glued to a larger piece of paper.
“It’s about touching people and they are holding their kids,” she said of her design, which used the works of artist William H. Johnson as a template.
“He tried to make it look like a real picture except with shapes,” Garland added.
For fifth grader Thiem Van, he started his first place work by using pencil then markers and crayons to crate fractals while Crull gave directions about fractals. Fractals are rough or fragmented geometric shapes that can be split into parts, each of which is a reduced-size copy of the whole.
“I thought about a tree because it’s natural. When I was almost finished, I put a heart in it so people could see it,” Van said.
Fourth grader Alexys Lorimier used crosses colored in pink and green for her first place drawing. “It was awesome. I liked it; they are all over the page.”
Blue ribbon winners had their artwork put on display at the Missouri State University in Springfield in April.
