Mayor Lowery Supporting North County Casino Project, Cites Jobs it Would Add

Mayor Robert G. Lowery, Sr. has come in support of the North County Casino project citing the 2,000 permanent jobs and thousands more construction jobs for the area it would create.

“With so many carpenters, ironworkers, pipefitters, sheet metal workers, electricians, plumbers and laborer’s out of work in this dire recession, the North County Casino project would be a life-line to thousands of North County families,” Lowery said.

The mayor, said in a press release: “Rather than worrying about competition between casinos in the region, the region’s leaders should be concerned that these jobs will be lost to another part of the State.  North County especially could use another economic engine.  If we want housing values to remain high, then there have to be jobs to keep families here,” Lowery said in his statement.

Lowery also pointed out that Maryland Heights and St. Charles have greatly benefited from their respective casinos and that hotels and restaurants have been added to these sites over time.  He further cited that other businesses have developed around these two sites and have made real-estate values in the area rise.

The Mayor believes everyone should understand that the information provided to him on the casino is that it will be 3.8 miles from the confluence of the Missouri and the Mississippi Rivers. “There is a misconception with the public regarding this fact,” he said.

The Spanish Lake Community Association is opposed to the casino so close to the confluence and wildlife wetlands.  County Executive Charles Dooley recently announced his opposition to the casino plan at Columbia Bottoms location
