Hazelwood West High student to receive award for service

Venus Paytocan, a junior at Hazelwood West High School, will receive an Inspire by Example-Service Learning Award on Missouri Service Day on April 28 in Jefferson City.

Paytocan is the only student from the District to be recognized for the award in 2010. She will spend the day in Jefferson City and will have the opportunity to tour the state capitol, as well as get guided tours of the state Supreme Court building and the Governor’s Mansion. She is also meeting with Sen. Jane Cunningham and Rep. Margo McNeil.

Chakita Jackson, community service coordinator at Hazelwood West High, said Paytocan has completed more than 271 hours of community service.

“Venus is the recipient of this award because of her hours of service to the community through A+ tutoring. Students in Hazelwood are only required to complete 50 hours of A+ tutoring to fulfill the state requirement. However, Venus has gone above and beyond giving her time to help students here at Hazelwood West with advanced physics, as well as helping at elementary schools,” said Jackson. Paytocan helps elementary students with math, reading and vocabulary.

“I feel that Venus is well-deserving of this award,” said Jackson. “Her supervising teacher, Sergy Zinovchik, says she demonstrates great leadership, she is always willing to help students, and she takes the initiative to do whatever it takes to help students succeed.”

“I think she represents the spirit of Hazelwood West,” said Jackson.
