Two wrestlers from Trinity Catholic High School and two wrestlers from high schools in the Hazelwood School District took home third place medals at the Missouri State High School Activities Association championships held Feb. 18-20 at Mizzou Arena, Columbia, on the University of Missouri campus.
Trinity Catholic, who had their highest total of state wrestling medals in the short history of the program (beginning in 2003), had the highest finish among Florissant Valley area high schools. Trinity finished 16th with 40 points in Class One while Hazelwood Central was the highest Suburban North Conference finisher as the Hawks took 18th in Class Four with 32.
Sophomore Marquis West (112 pounds, 23-6) and senior Garrett Beckham (145, 25-3) each took home third place medals for Trinity, who was the third highest-scoring St. Louis area high school in Class One behind Whitfield and John Burroughs. Beckham is one of two wrestlers from the Florissant Valley area that became a two-time state medallist.
Hazelwood Central senior Julian Smith (215, 46-1) was not only a two-time state medallist but was one of two Central wrestlers to take home state medals. Smith was unbeaten prior to the state semifinals two weeks ago but lost to Hayden Bock, Park Hill, 5-2 and had to settle for third place. Junior DuShawn Fraiser (152, 36-8) finished fifth for Central.
Hazelwood East senior Meldrick Woods (160, 45-2) was the other third-place finisher as he helped East to a 20th-place finish (26.5 points) in Class Four. McCluer North (19 place-28), Hazelwood West and Ritenour each had a Class Four State medallist McCluer North senior Willie Essex (125, 32-13) finished fourth, Hazelwood West junior Antoine White (112, 32-7) finished fifth and Ritenour junior Shawn Williams (119, 36-8) finished sixth.
