BY JIM WIENERS

Hazelwood Central and Hazelwood East High Schools’ Girls Basketball teams each hope to make an impression this season later this month when each gets to play defending Class Five State Champion Incarnate Word Academy.

On Jan 27 Hazelwood Central hosts IWA in a 3 p.m. game rescheduled from early December as power outages postponed the game. On Dec. 31 IWA hosts Hazelwood East in a 7 p.m. game. East or Central could have a rematch with IWA if they are still alive by the time the March 3 Class Five Quarterfinal game is played at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

Incarnate Word is currently 14-1 and has not lost a game in the state of Missouri since March, 2005 as the Red Knights lost to eventual 2005 State Champion Springfield-Kickapoo in the Class Five Semifinals at Mizzou Arena, Columbia. IWA has not lost in the St. Louis area since a Jan. 11, 2005 loss at Metro Women’s Athletic Association rival St. Joseph’s Academy. IWA has not lost at home since Feb. 17, 2003 (to Jefferson City, 61-50) and no St. Louis area team has won at IWA since Jan. 22, 2003 (to St. Charles-Duchesne, 43-42).

IWA has four games to play before heading to Hazelwood Central including this Saturday at Cape Girardeau Notre Dame.

Hazelwood Central was 10-2 prior to last Tuesday’s home game against the Academy of the Visitation and last Wednesday’s game at Francis Howell High. Central is 1-1 against Francis Howell Central, 1-0 in the Suburban North (80-39 over Ritenour, Jan. 12) and the only other loss is to St. Joseph’s Academy. Prior to playing IWA Central is at Hazelwood West Tuesday, 7 p.m., and at Hazelwood East (a rematch of the Suburban North Tournament Championship game), Jan. 25.

Hazelwood East was 12-2 prior to Wednesday’s game against Trinity Catholic in the opening round of the John Burroughs Tournament, a tournament the Spartans won last year. East is coming off a 55-50 loss Monday to defending Class Two State Champion Metro St. Louis in the Martin Luther King Shootout in East St. Louis, Ill. Hazelwood East’s only other loss is to Hazelwood Central, 50-47, in the Suburban North Tournament Championship game played Dec. 5 and will have a rematch at home on Jan. 25.

East has Suburban North conference wins over Pattonville (61-34 on Jan. 4) and McCluer North (63-53 last Friday). After playing in the Burroughs Tournament East hosts Nerinx Hall this Tuesday and after meeting play at Ritenour Jan. 30 before meeting IWA.

McCLUER NORTH was 11-4 prior to hosting Northwest-Cedar Hill Tuesday and lost twice to Hazelwood East. North also lost to McCluer South-Berkeley as well as to Riverview Gardens (in the Suburban North Tournament) and the Stars visit Riverview Friday at 7 p.m. The Stars won the Kennedy Tournament and has a Suburban North win over Ritenour (59-29).

RIVERVIEW GARDENS was 9-2 prior to last Tuesday’s home game against former Suburban North rival Normandy. Riverview’s losses were to Hazelwood Central (58-45 in the Suburban North Tournament) and McCluer South-Berkeley (61-38 on Dec. 14). Riverview has Suburban North wins over McCluer (54-43, Jan. 5) and Pattonville (74-57 last Thursday).
