Trinity Catholic Finally Wins First
MSHSAA State Title, Adds 2 More
By Jim Wieners
It took Trinity over 15 years to win their first Missouri State High School Activities Association championship but in year 16, the Titans ended up with three state titles.
Dec. 1, 2018 was an historic day for Trinity as the Titan Football team won their first state title. After losing to Georgia Class 7A Runner Up Colquitt County and Illinois Class 7A Quarterfinalist East St. Louis (triple overtime), the Titans won the final 13 games and won the Archdiocesan Athletic Association Division II title. They dethroned Class Three State Champion Maryville (state semifinals) and dealt AAA Division I Champion Cardinal Ritter their only loss in the Class Three Championship game.
Two of Trinity’s leaders, quarterback/athlete Isaiah Williams and linebacker Shammond Cooper, are heading to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and play for former Trinity head coach Cory Patterson, now in his second year as Illini assistant to Lovie Smith. Cooper was the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Defensive Player of the Year. Trinity, in 2017, was second to Lamar in Class Two State.
On May 25, Girls and Boys Track And Field made history when each won Class Three State titles; a year after Trinity took second to Cardinal Ritter Boys and third behind John Burroughs and Cardinal Ritter Girls. Trinity was the only school to score 100 points (Girls 118, Boys 100) in all five classes. Ritter took second in Boys and third in Girls while Burroughs Girls took second.
Sophomore Akila Heffner led a Trinity top-four state Class Three sweep of the 100-Meter Hurdles and won the Long Jump. Sophomore Kayla Millett completed a Class Three Girls Hurdle sweep by winning at 300 Meters, Trinity swept the Class Three Javelin as sophomore Malcolm Harvey won the Boys and sophomore Sydney Juszczyk set a Class Three State record in winning the Girls.
Trinity swept the Boys and Girls Class Three 4×100-Meter Relay, senior Kemric Winston completed his prep career by repeating the 100-Meter Dash title and winning the 200-Meter Dash Trinity also won the Class Three 4×200-Meter Relay. Trinity swept the AAA Open and the AAA Championship but Cardinal Ritter only competed in the AAA Championship
Winning three state titles in a school year is rare but it seems that is took place, especially among Spanish Lake-based high schools. In 1995-96, Hazelwood East won Class 5A Football, Class 4A Boys Track And Field and Class 4A Girls Track And Field. Ironically, in the 1995 calendar year, Hazelwood East won Boys Track and Field, Girls Track And Field and Football, so Trinity will try that feat in 2019 Football.
Trinity had a chance at Class Three Boys Basketball but the AAA Division II Champions lost in the Quarterfinal to eventual State Champion Vashon at Normandy Viking Hall. Vashon, at home, defeated AAA Division I Champion Cardinal Ritter in the District Six Final.
LUTHERAN NORTH had their best season in Girls Basketball but the Metro League Champions lost in the Class Three State Final to Four-Peat Strafford, and their 115-game win streak. Lutheran North football started 0-3, including a loss to Illinois Class 7A State Champion LaGrange-Nazareth Academy but the Metro League Champions won 10 straight, including a 21-20 win at Class Four runner up Mary Institute Country Day School, before falling in the Class Two Semifinal to State Champion Blair Oaks
Boys Soccer was 10-17 but the Class One, District Three Champions finished fourth in State. Lutheran North won Metro League Boys and Girls Track And Field while sharing Metro League Boys Basketball with St. Louis Priory.
